Tools of the Trade / Re: Who builds your Qlab file, and how?

A designer will generally hand me a zip drive

People still use zip drives?  Nice!

Tools of the Trade / Re: Who supplies spike tape?

It's likely the director just wants to ensure it's there, not whether you specifically have provided it. "Do you have spike tape?" can be translated to "Can I cross this off my list of things to worry about?"

Tools of the Trade / Re: Eco-Clip: Make Your Own Notebook
« on: Mar 31, 2014, 04:59 pm »
I was in need of a new notebook a couple of weeks ago and thought about this, but there was something about it that just couldn't get me onboard.

It was a little bit unclear if any kind of leather/leather-ish cover came with it.  I also have visions of dropping it and the clip somehow opening and all of my pages blowing away in the wind.  I don't know if that's realistic, but a concern nonetheless.

Ultimately for $9 it's not enough of a savings for me to switch from my go to Moleskine notebook.  One lasts me almost a year, so I'll go ahead and spend the extra $7/year and have an expert do the binding for me.

You're still filling it with paper that has to come from somewhere, so I'm not sure I even accept the "eco" premise, though it probably helps to sell product.

Tools of the Trade / Re: SM App Price
« on: Mar 31, 2014, 04:36 pm »
The replies so far hinge heavily on functionality (understandably).  So we understand it has to do enough to be worth the money, what specifically are SMs out there looking for?

I told the audience of a thousand or so that we were at five minutes.

And I bet there was still 50+ late seating...

Is the anon poster willing to send the relevant text from the report in question?  I'd be interested in reading that prior to offering an opinion.

Thanks for the response - and certainly an interesting discussion.

I've started a poll and thread here to continue the discussion.

Tools of the Trade / SM App Price
« on: Mar 23, 2014, 10:24 am »
Further to this thread in the Intro's board, I thought it worthwhile to continue the discussion on the market for a fully-featured SM-specific app.

What would you pay for such an app for mobile/tablet devices?  What features would you require?  Vote in the poll above and debate your responses in this thread.

Talk with the Employer and see if you can accept the first 7.5 weeks and then be replaced.
If you can't, it wasn't meant to be.

Agreed on this. And echoing it's best to be up front about it, especially if it's an employer your friend would seek employment with in the future. That'd be comparable to stepping over dollars to pick up pennies.

My opinion - you need to [rapidly] climb the ladder at your organization one rung at a time until you hit the person that understands the severity of glossing over this type of situation.  Though yes, it's unlikely the worst will happen, it has happened before.  Best to cover your bases.

The conversation should be simple and to the point: "I'm concerned that we're exposing customers and employees to physical harm, and exposing the company to financial risk both in terms of casualty liability and lost performances for regulatory reasons.  In my opinion we need to take x, y, z action immediately.  If you disagree I understand and will escalate accordingly"

If ultimately you get to the top of the organization and no action is taken, you can take action yourself.  If at that point you're shown the door at the organization I think you should question whether or not it's a good fit for you in the first place - but at least you'll know you've taken every step you can to provide a safe environment, which is certainly better than the alternative.

Welcome to SMNetwork, good to have you onboard.

I am curious as to the primary purpose of your apps - are they intended as for-sale products to earn profit?  If so, have you done market research to determine what your consumer base wants, acceptable price points, etc.?

The reason I ask is that this discussion seems to come up once a year or so but never really gains any traction, and reviews of SM-specific software/apps to date are lukewarm at best.  Around here we'll all say we want x, y, z - but how that translates into profitability for an app developer with such an incredibly small (compared to something like MS Office) target consumer base is what always escapes me.

Curious to your thoughts on that - and happy posting!

The Green Room / Re: Perhaps a moment of silence . . .

A casualty of the digital age. I don't remember the last time I've been in a brick and mortar office supply store. Amazon Prime FTW!

The Green Room / Re: [GAME] The Show Report
« on: Mar 05, 2014, 12:37 pm »
Solution-If it is large enough for someone to fall in, at an appropriate time (end of song or an exit),  bring the curtain down and hold the show in order to fix it. Tell house management the situation.  If it can't be fixed in a relative short time, (5 minutes or less) warn the cast about the hole, put a mattress underneath it,  and if there are any blackouts, bring up blues (as there are a few cues that are blueouts) After the show discuss with crew chief and put in the report that they will come in early to troubleshoot.

Problem-(this happened to me years ago) An actor calls from a payphone 14 miles from his car saying it broke down. He doesn't own a cell phone.  No understudy. He is a major character. You just called 1/2 hour.

Solution: A brilliant stroke of luck!  A PA on staff won the under 16 Southeast regional go-kart championship in 2004 and is dispatched posthaste to fetch the actor, arriving just in time for places.

Problem: Said actor's costume and makeup are extensive and take the full half hour every performance

All of this said, perhaps LizzG's suggestion is the simplest and most elegant solution?

Regardless of sexuality/gender/etc they are after all in high school.  Even the most homogenous groups of high schoolers are socially awkward and likely inexperienced in these situations.

Specifically as an educational environment with minors perhaps it's best to provide all students a few private areas to change.
