The Green Room / Re: Show me your mugs! (Or water bottles)

That's good to know about the grounds (yuck) but I meant the bitterness caused by the coffee beans steeping in hot liquid so long.

Since every SM I know carries one (or more).

I just got a bodum travel mug and it has changed my life.

It's a mini french press! I even cold-brewed coffee in it when it was sweltering outside.

I do need a new water bottle though, as mine has gone missing.

I've wondered though, all the directions I read for french press say to empty it after 5 minutes, since the coffee will turn bitter. Do you find that to be the case?

Tools of the Trade / Re: Style Question

I will sometimes bike to work and if I do I bring a second set of clothes.

80% of the time I drive a scooter to work (not a liquor-cycle, mine goes 60mph) so I do get the sideways looks with some of my clothing choices while on the road. It's another reason I'm not too keen on skirts or dresses, unless I pack them separately for an event after work.
On top of that I have very thick, shoulder length curly hair. I've become adept at doing a quick 3-minute hair style with bobby pins and hair bands once the helmet comes off.

Nice jeans or dress pants - no holes, tears or rips.
Clean, work casual top. Not always a button-up. Tanks/camis if I know I'll be doing a LOT of moving/heavy lifting, but I usually have it under a nicer top. As a woman, you have to have the option of changing up or down. I've been surprised with patron/producer visits more times than I can count.
Shoes I can work in - that can be flats or shorter heels (depending on the work day), or dressy boots. All shoes have to have good tread.
All my rehearsal rooms tend to be freezing, so I'm kind of known for my sweaters  ;)
Make-up...I MIGHT wear it once a month - I've never been a big fan, but that's my personality. If the mood strikes I might come in with light coverage, but then I get funny looks from my tech crew.

I wore a dress to rehearsal once. I was asked constantly if I had an important meeting or job interview that day. That was the last time I did that.

I would say let's make this thread equal opportunity but I'd be scared what we'd come up with....beyond "I like my theatre like I like my women - with nice long legs."

hah, a legitimate fear, to be sure...but I'll do a sweet one just to ease fears in case we want to:

I like my theatre like I like my women....smart.

You just earned a bucket full of brownie points.

Employment / Re: SM Typecasts

Would any of you consider changing up your resume in order to seem less stereotyped? Downplay the classics in order to showcase your experience with musicals, for example.

She should answer, "Um....yes. But I'm willing to overlook that to get this position."

How weird is that interview going to be? "I see here under your accomplishments section that you have a Tony Award. Do you think you might be overqualified for this position?"

Employment / SM Typecasts
« on: Aug 06, 2012, 09:22 am »
Matthew brought up a good point in his Self-Promotion thread that I thought was a good topic of discussion. Actors tend to get typecast all the time, but it's true that stage managers get typecast as well. Usually it's out of our control or without intention, though I know SMs that had a focus early on and stuck with it.

I tend to get typecast with straight dramas for some reason. Even though the majority of my training as a PA and ASM was in musicals, I've only ever managed three of them. The only reason I can think of is job referral, since I can connect a director who referred me to another director who referred me to another director...all who were directing straight dramas.

This season though, because my company is still on a PSM/SM search, I've been assigned most of the musicals, starting with Charlie Brown and ending with Pinkalicious (lord help me). I would love to manage a large cast musical and put the early training I received to work. A large cast, in my mind, is over 30 people and it looks like I might get close this season with Secret Garden. I'd also like to try my hand at managing an opera, though I need to brush up on certain skills before I'd seriously consider it.

What kind of SM are you typecast as? Was this on purpose or by coincidence?
What kind of productions would you like to manage instead?

Thanks for the response, Matthew. I was always curious, especially since I noticed you were still doing Shakes after you left Shakespeare Theater Co...thought it was either a torrid love affair or an endless series of booty calls! And you're right about the typecasting...

I like my theatre like I like my men: with perfect lighting, imaginative staging, and a few breathtaking moments.

The Green Room / Re: Which line would you take?
« on: Aug 06, 2012, 08:25 am »
I could probably stand to use a few of the lines that I know of but haven't taken....the Hammerstein line for instance. For some reason I tend to veer away from the classics  ???. Since I've never been to NYC (I know, shocking), if I were on vacation it would definitely have to be the Lincoln Center and NYSF/Public Theatre lines.

Would you say you've chased Shakespeare, Shakespeare has chased you, or a combination of both? (Serious question btw...and how have you never managed Much Ado? One of my favs!)
