Employment / Re: SM Typecasts
« on: Aug 06, 2012, 09:28 pm »
is it a cop out to say I wasn't really a type cast by a theatrical style? For a while I thought I was in a rut of classical theater, but that was always counter balanced by more modern pieces with Godlight Theatre. I feel like I had a healthy mix of everything per year: Usually one or two musicals, classic piece, couple modern things, and then something strange like a dance show.

I suppose if anything, I'd be pigeon holed into the SM of new works as that was the most common thread between my shows.

The Green Room / Re: Which line would you take?

Pfft! No questions! Sondheim! Not only does it connect with pretty much every other major line, but it is the most epic and awesome line there is. Hits all the major points in the uh...city...

and because I'm horribly impartial. Sondheim FTW

If it is simply a proximity issue and the Costume Shop supervisor has an office that functions fine for their purposes, great. Take Office B. Proximity to shop (while a convenience) isn't a necessity to do your job.

If the Costume shop supervisor moving into office B opens up their current office to your usage and works for you, that creates even fewer waves and gives everyone what they want.

The Green Room / Re: SOCIAL MEDIA - Dos and Donts

Maybe it's just me, but I have a very fundamental issue with someone jumping on a fellow theatrical talent telling her to basically stuff your opinion because we have to all stand together in harmony. Not only because it's hilariously contradictary but have these people worked with the people I've worked with in this absolute cut throat business? This is not the most harmonious business in the world.

The composer in question said the same thing during the Tony Awards when people were complaining about the show. Simply put "don't trash the Tony's because we're all in it and we need to support one another." Let's be honest here, Some theater (even Broadway theater) sucks. And if I think it sucks, I shouldn't need to fear reprisals for stating my opinion because of some unwritten brotherly rule.

When any popular reviewer (Times, Post...pick your preference),  who I'm sure has much more influence over the paying public and a much broader reach than a tweet by an actress who has just over 2500 followers, says something similar people sit in the dressing room with the rest of their colleagues and read it with glee as they rip the show apart.

The Green Room / Re: 54 uses for Binder clips

Since my teen years, I have been a hat fanatic. I tend to have about 10-15 baseball caps in rotation at any given point in time. Binder clips either attached to a hanger, or screwed into a piece of 1x makes for a great hat rack.

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: Sweeney Todd
« on: Jun 25, 2012, 03:16 pm »
Depends on the production and the concept.

I've done Sweeney twice. Once was a scaled reproduction of the original Broadway show. Full pie shop unit that could be rotated any way you wanted to set a new scene. Double level set with a bridge that could be raised and lowered. Full slab of metal in the back that would rise and lower to cover the pie shop when it wasn't needed etc etc.

The second production was a box set. No movements. Everything was exactly where it needed to be already. The only moving part on this set was the trap door and chair which was operated from underneath a platform.

So it depends on your director's concept. If they go for the original version, strap in for a show that could become quite complex with all the happenings of a full set with fly system. If they go for the new Broadway adaptation you might find yourself in the midst of a cue heavy lighting show to help tell the story.

Beyond the specific production concept: Yes. Sweeney Todd is fairly busy at all times. I've always felt like the production was a steam engine which just chugs along and hardly ever stops to catch it's own breath barring a few moments.

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: Drunk Actor
« on: Jun 20, 2012, 07:04 pm »
In my case we didn't find out about it until after the fact. Due to the nature of the show, he endangered every single performer not to mention the audience (lots of swords and the front row was only 3 feet off the decking on the same level). In this case, the performer was spoken to and was given a stern warning: Do it again, and they would be released.

Now in this case, it was more like Matthew's. He wasn't rip roarin' drunk. Just buzzed. And there is nothing we can do about it beyond enforce the contract which stated do not drink 3 hours prior to performance (I think....I'd have to actually look it up for the exact wording).

On a side note, if you're going to complain about a show you just did and reveal that amount of extremely personal information about an actor, use your own name as your user name, and list your current gig....you may want to remove one or two of those elements to better protect yourself. Especially if you potentially used the first initial of the actress involved. You don't have to be registered to this forum to google it, and browse.

The Hardline / Re: Air Conditioning broken
« on: Jun 17, 2012, 12:56 pm »
That's what I was getting at, vsm. If steps are being taken to fix the system, implement routines to protect your staff from dehydration and heat exhaustion. If the theater isn't taking steps, that's when I'd involve the union.

Has the theater given any indication when the AC might be fixed?

Who will continue their 6 year boycott (save one year) of the Tony's?

Two thumbs, pointing at this guy.

You could always take the vicious approach:

Front:
Don't Anger the Flight Crew

Back
Or my Nose will itch while you're in the air

Yeah that's too wordy.

Look into CITC FX . They have a hypoallergenic fog/haze fluid that might be right up your ally.

Water based, not horribly expensive. They are good people there. I've had to talk to them more than a few times since I started working at my current job.

The Green Room / Re: Fat Suit
« on: Jun 06, 2012, 01:18 pm »
If you just need the belly to be big, you could always do something similar to pregnent padding. Though doing that on next to no budget is harder to accomplish. But if you can spend $20-$30 on material you could make it happen.

Velcro to attach around the actor, elastic bands, and create a padding sack in the front.

For complete low rent ideas: Take a throw pillow and wear a tight shirt. Even if you use a square pillow a tight shirt will round out the corners.
