Employment / Re: Name Dropping?
« on: Oct 10, 2007, 06:47 pm »
I try to put it in the context of that person having worked there. I've often written something like this:

I recently spoke with Jane Smith, a co-worker of mine at Theatre  X, and former Stage Manager at Theatre Y (where you're applying to) in regards to her time at Y. It was encouraging to hear about how wonderful her experiences while she was at Y, and makes me especially interested to speak with you about the possibility of future employment.

Something like that.

Also- these meetings are (hopefully) not design meetings!  ;)

Ha.Haha. Hahaha. I laugh at your optimism.

Though I am really optimistic that the production dept. meeting we had in July will change that.

You can try Theatreworks as well.

From my experience, they tend towards younger actors and crew. My friend's tour, with the exception of her and the PSM were all recent college grads.

It does yes. My logic failed me on that one.

Thanks

Thanks Scoot, but that's what I found.

What I'm looking for is info regarding weekly totals, the same way they are regulated in LORT and SPT.

Or are they not?

Is there anything in the showcase code about weekly hours? I can't find anything other than span of day.

I only use warnings when there has been a long period without any cues. I SMed HurlyBurly recently and there was one act where literally nothing happened for 20+ pages. So I used a warning to get the attention of my board ops back to the show and ready for the s/b and GO. Both my sound and light board ops would watch movies or do homework during the 3 hour production. This was fine with me as they never missed a cue.

I do exactly the same thing. I give a one-page warning (more than 1 minute) if there's been a long time without cues. On one show this year we had 37 pages without a single cue, lights, sound or video. I discussed that with my board op and then asked how long in advance they needed a standby, since running on a computer makes things much much faster. One said a few lines ahead and the other said the line immediately preceding and so long as a had a response I was fine with that. Sometimes in instances like that I will encourage very quiet and low-key chatter just to make sure everyone stays alert.

I did however have a 14-year old board op fall completely asleep and I had to throw one of my opening night mini-vodka (plastic) bottles at him to wake him up. Apparently he took the nyquil instead of the dayquil. Oy.

People's Light and Theatre just outside of Philly does. The pay is ok, but they house and you get benefits so you can make it work.

I spent 4 years there...PM me if you want.

They're in NY. Has anyone worked for them, heard about them, etc?

What's the scoop!

I've been working in dance since 1982 and spike tape has never been a problem. If they trip on spike tape--- well I have no comment.

Slightly off topic but that just reminded me of my Nutcracker Snowflakes who couldn't seen to understand that the reason the were FALLING over the snow pieces that they dumped was because they were using too much.

I actually had to free up a crew member to dose it out to them- one half a dixie cup per pass because they couldn't grasp the concept of grabbing a smaller handful.

I went to West Chester University in PA and loved it.

I feel like I got a really wonderful education with a lot of hands-on experience. I got my first professional job lined up before I graduated and I have been employed on a constant basis since.

The department has also recently combined with dance and music and moved into a new multi-million dollar facility.

I ended up not working for them because Lowell took too long to call me about a start date and I didn't request off the time from Stoker for it.

We had spoken in January about a March/April build and too much time had passed.

And one for a crewed show.

I was the ASM, sorry my track is highlighted throughout.

Also, I should mention that these shrink very well to 5x7 cards for individuals which I have formatted on my computer if anyone is interested.

I'll jump on the bandwagon and send mine along.

This one is for a 1 ASM, no other crew of any kind show.
