...I set the auto reply on my email to say I am unavailable to respond...I wish there was a similar response system for phone calls.

On most phones, you can block some numbers at will, so could always block work numbers on your day off - these numbers would then go straight to voicemail. On iPhones (I realise most people don't have one) you can use 'Do Not Disturb' - calls will only come through if the same number calls twice within 3 minutes, or if they are one of your favourites.

My lack of iPhone is showing  ;D.
What I hate is when a phone call comes through on a day off, I see who it is, I send it to voicemail....and then I think about what possible work-related issue could be waiting for me. That's the part I hate - that my mind so easily thinks about work when I have other things in front of me.

I recently had to deal with this issue within the office. At the moment I keep a calendar for the week at my cubicle that anyone can see, I email my basic schedule and agenda for the week to my supervisor, and if worse comes to worse and I am dying for real time off work (I have the same problem in that my day off rarely is fully a day off), I set the auto reply on my email to say I am unavailable to respond...I wish there was a similar response system for phone calls.

In some cases you might have more work waiting for you. But I find that the majority of people contact the SM because it's the most convenient and quick option. If you make yourself unavailable (hey, most of them have the luxury of a weekend and you have to make your own...often in only a day) they simply need to move on to a less convenient option.

Your props list is going to be fantastic.

During a production of A Streetcar Named Desire, I began the last series of cues with "Let's put the cuckoo back in her nest," just before Blanche was carted away. The crew wouldn't allow me to start those cues until I said it every night.

I can get behind this:

What is your favorite word? Onomatopoeia. It's just fun to say.

What is your least favorite word? Excuse my french....c*nt. I don't care what Eve Ensler says, I'm not reclaiming it.

What turns you on creatively, spiritually, or emotionally? I love an intelligent debate and exchange of ideas.

What turns you off? Politics.

What is your favorite curse word? Bumbled*ck. I heard an Argentinian opera director (I'll keep them nameless) call one of the singers this. I'm not certain it's really a curse word, other than the last syllable, but I love it.

What sound or noise do you love? My son laughing.

What sound or noise do you hate? Incessant fighting.

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? Writer, either fiction or children's.

What profession would you not like to attempt? If Mike Rowe from Dirty Jobs says it's the worst job he ever did, I'm going with that - pig semen collector.

If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the pearly gates? No worries, every day here is a day off.

I was looking at Dell's version until I noticed they stopped making them; I read up on it further and short battery life was an issue. But I've been completely sold on the idea for a while, I'm just waiting for the right one to come along.

So we are going to have to put the show on with only two days of tech. rehearsal.....

Oh dear

There comes a time when you have to be more prepared than usual, communicate very well with your people, and pull a Tim Gunn *make it work*. You can do it  ;)

We're not too worried about it here inland NC, but of course most people I know are in the Northeast. Hoping everyone stays safe!

Many people I know have profiles and people from potential employers look at them, but as for looking for/getting company information, I end up at their FB page.

Stage Management: Other / SM my first awards show
« on: Oct 25, 2012, 07:58 pm »
I have a first coming up in May: the Blumey Awards, a high school performing arts award. I was the ASM for it last year (which was its first year) but I wasn't included in many things that the original SM did. It follows a format close to the Tonys - guests introduce the categories, performances between awards, etc. and it's held in a large venue (about 2,000). I'll be receiving details on dates soon.

It should include many of the same people I worked with last season, many of whom I worked with separately on other shows, so that's helpful. Anyone have any tips for me before going into this?

Great article! We've had young casts where one or more had to use canes or wheelchairs, they simply blossom onstage.

...and what do you do with designers and actors who are not young computer-literate kids? I have a set designer who hires someone to make his CAD or other computer generated designs, another who still draws them long-hand to turn in, and several senior actors who expect hard copies if I am not gonna phone for calendars, contact sheets etc.

I think going totally paperless may never happen. But I am grateful to communicate paperlessly with as many folks as possible.

Heck, I have a set designer we contract who doesn't - and refuses to - have an email address, or a phone that takes texts. But pyromnt is in high school where the new normal is the smartphone. The new normal for me in high school was an email address. Something else will change in another 10 years too.

I'd like to know the program that let them take blocking notes with the stylus. I've tried the comment section in Word but only after typing out the script myself, personally I'd need more practice. And the guinea pig projects were both plays, I'd like to see if their process would translate in a musical or opera.
...and they had to recharge their call book. I didn't see anything about a paper backup should that charger not have been found in time.

I'd take a job referral over a review mention any day!
