The Green Room / Re: What did you learn today?
« on: Jul 22, 2010, 02:47 pm »
Today I learned that even the non-theatre world is smaller than you imagine, and you can meet people who know the same people you know over 1,000 miles away from home!

On_Headset: Wow.  Giggling, but wow!

This weekend I learned that latex body paint is best used in cold situations, as sweating will make it start to peel off on it's own.

Tools of the Trade / Re: [FAQ] What goes inside a SM Kit?

late_stranger, I, too am a fan of the colorful band-aid (my own personal stock has Amy Brown faeries in it.  Thanks, Mom!), but be sure to stock plenty of good old flesh toned, as well.  The last thing an actor wants is a big neon green band-aid on their hand when they've got to go on stage and be serious!

The Green Room / Re: Stage managing your life
« on: Jul 14, 2010, 01:46 pm »
I know it's an oldish topic, but I have a perfect SMing my life exmple, this week.  Tomorrow, my husband, my best friend, and I are leaving for a much anticipated, long weekend, trip to a Masquerade ball in L.A.  Over my last vacation, I got really sick, and spent two days miserable with stomach cramps and fever.  No one wants to be that sick, but I NEVER want to be that sick on my rare vacation/fun days, ever again.
So, for this trip, I've made a "No One Will Have A Bad Day" kit, which I've just now realized is a mini SM kit.  Medicines for most of the gastro-intestinal ailments, pain killers, cough drops, fever reducers, Sleepy-time tea, safety pins, glasses repair kit, sewing kit, band aids, 5-hour energy drinks, rum and chocolate!
Besides that, don't even ask me about the binder with to-do lists, packing lists, place tickets, event tickets, hotel reservations, etc.!

Any chance someone could share "Night Blooms" by Margaret Baldwin?  We don't start rehearsals until next month, but I've got a lot of down time now to start on prep.  Thanks!

I have to say that college helped me, personally, but hasn't really helped me get a job.  I even had one person looking for a carpenter overhire tell me they were looking for someone from a more prestigious school!
I went to a small liberal arts school that wasn't known for it's theatre program, but was doing good stuff.  I got my hands dirty with EVERYTHING.  I probably worked on 90% of the shows in the three spaces over the course of my time there, which gave me a lot of experience and I learned more doing shows than I did in any of my classes.
However, once I graduated, no one else cared about what I had done.  I had all these skills, and no one really wanted to pay any attention to it.
On the other side, I can't imagine what else I would have done, right out of high school.  I wasn't really ready for anything besides some more school.
I do think getting into a ton of student debt is never the way to go.  Go to a less prestigious school (where you can frequently shine brightly), work through school, get scholarships, but do not go into debt right out of high school.  Life is hard enough; I can't imagine having thousands of dollars of debt hanging over me, too.

The Green Room / Summer projects
« on: Jun 24, 2010, 03:02 pm »
So, what's rocking, this summer?  It doesn't have to be an SM gig, but if you're really excited about your current gig, let loose!  What is occupying your mind, slipping into the corners of awareness when you're eating dinner, taking a shower, or supposedly concentrating on something else?

I know someone who's trying to couch surf the entire summer (a whole year, actually) as a sociology study of people in their homes.  My husband is tackling the http://www.twohundredsitups.com/ challenge.  I'm working on creating a custom Phoenix Masquerade costume (http://www.flickr.com/photos/tempest_fae/sets/72157624197085606/) in silk and hand dyeing it.

I've been working without a pattern, and not a whole lot of experience with dye, but everything is coming out gorgeously, and it's almost done.  After the last layer of dye, earlier this week, I've got to re-iron everything, add some trim to the wings, paint the tail feathers, add the "feather shafts," put the feathers on a waistband, and wait for the corset to arrive, and it's done.  This thing has been CONSUMING my waking thoughts.

What can't you get out of your head?

Tools of the Trade / Re: Headset-suitable eyewear
« on: Jun 17, 2010, 12:17 pm »
The quirky little part of my heart is screaming, "YES!  WEAR A MONOCLE! (and take pictures with your headset!)" but aside from that, I can't be of much help.  I wear glasses, and have never had problems with any headset, featherweight, or big muff.

No, wait, I just rememberd something.  I started wearing a hat whenever I'm on hedset, because I was having the same problem with the big headsets, making my glasses push into my head and my head hurt.  I got a leather driving cap sort of like this one:

The bottom edge is pretty far down on my head, close to my glasses.  The edge of the hat takes most of the pressure off the glasses, creating a sort of gap between your ear, the hat and the headset and spreading the pressure out over a bigger area.  Also, it's mad stylish and my crews are always amused about the generaly mild, female SM wearing a black leather hat to call the show.

I love my hat, but I imagine any hat that would fit under your headset and fit close to your glasses earpieces would have a similar effect!  I've been doing it for so long, now, that I forgot the original reason; it's just part of my routine!

New Zeland.  There's so much variety in such a small area, and it's so far away!

The Green Room / Re: The Stage Manager's Nightmare
« on: May 26, 2010, 12:56 pm »
My usual recurring one is that I'll show up to SM a show and find someone stuffing my into a costume and sending me out on stage for a completely different play with no idea of the plot, much less the lines.  I think my favorite variation on this dream was when I was put in a little  blue dress and white apron and sent into a fantastical woodland set.  "Alice in Wonderland!" I thought.  "I can at least fake my way through Alice in Wonderland!"  It was not Alice in Wonderland.

Though there was that one dream where I was SMing Camelot set on Mars...in the round...with audience participation...and had to call the show from a crappy monitor, three buildings over.

Homework Help / Re: (Homework [Help) Me!]
« on: May 18, 2010, 11:03 am »
I have to agree with On_Headset: the question itself is flawed because it's focusing on the wrong priorities.  It should have been phrased more like, "How do you protect the children you're in charge of, the liability of your employing organization, and yourself from a slander law-suit while, hopefully keeping a good atmosphere at the theatre and not embarrasing the man's child?"

Everything from here on out is assuming that I don't live in a "require to report" state.  If I did, that's what I'd have to do.  I'd let the producer know, first, but I'd report over their objections if necessary, for the good of the kids, me, and the theatre.

Several things I would not do: ask the man straight out what's going on, make any assumptions, whatsoever, or converse about it with anyone who is not in my direct, upward chain of command.

The first thing I would do, when getting these "vague reports" from the boys is to ask for more clarification, on the spot (which I probably wouldn't get, but you have to try.)  For all I know, they COULD be uncomfortable with him because he reeks of garlic or forces them to listen to polka music or tales of his latest D&D character's battle with the goblin horde.

Assuming that the reports were made before a show: If I were a male SM, I'd find excuses to pop into the dressing room more frequently until curtain (let me check your makeup because it was a little off last night, wardrobe made a slight adjustment so how's your costume, I heard Bobby had a cold so do you need cough drops, etc.) but as a female SM, I'd have a trusted male crew member/ASM run these little "errands" without letting him know the real reason behind it.

After the show, I'd call the producer and explain what was going on, exactly what the boys said, and any other information my "errands" may have garnered me.  I would follow this up in writing, including only the facts and no hypotheses of my own.  And I'd insist on a replacement.  Tomorrow.  I know male volunteers are rare, but they're not one in a million, and we all know an actor who is not currently working, a board member, or a teacher, or a dad with a day job who may not be related to anyone in the cast but can be trusted and can do the job, at least for a few nights.  If nothing else, I'd drag my husband in and make him do it until we could get a permenant replacement.

The next day, I would call the volunteer and thank him for his help, but let him know that his services were no longer needed.  (Actually, I'd foist this off on the volunteer coordinator, if I could, and in my opinion they would need to be apprised of the facts of the situation.)  If he asked why, I'd be honest(ish).  "The boys have told me that you're distracting them from focusing on their performance.  We've found someone else to watch their room."  And for the rest of the conversation, I'd be as nice or as mean as he was, but he would not be coming past the stage door when he dropped his child off for the show, that evening.

Employment / Re: Child Wrangling
« on: May 14, 2010, 10:09 pm »
Hooray for truth in advertising!

By-the-by, everyone, if you're ever offered an ASM position for a show that has lots of kids, be sure to ask if there will be a seperate child wrangler, or if it will be included in your duties.  I made a less-than-informed descision once.  16 kids and I once spent a very miserable Christmas season, together...

I realize this is an old gag, but it's a fun one everyone can participate in!

Finish this sentence (one response per post, please, so everyone gets a chance): "If all the world's a stage..."

"If all the world's a stage, why am I the only one who seems to know the lines and blocking?"

Oh, wow, Missliz!  That website!  Ooooo!  My love of office supplies AND sarcastic sense of humor all in one!  It will be all your fault when I'm in the poor house!

After some rabid google serching, yesterday, I found this: http://www.jamieraquel.com/default.asp  I e-mailed the company asking about the internal measurements.  She responded quite quickly and said that the spread between the file hanging bars was 12".  Since most reasonable sized 3-ring binders have a dimension somewhere between 11" and 12" it will work!  I know what I'm getting myself for my birthday this year!  And just in time for my fall shows, too!

Tools of the Trade / File Totes
« on: May 05, 2010, 11:12 am »
I went to Office Depot, that mecca of all Stage Managers, yesterday to get a Mother's Day gift.  I was a good girl, and didn't buy anything for myself, but I couldn't resist walking around and drooling over the office supplies.  and I almost bought something very similar to this: http://www.lillianvernon.com/catalog/product_display.jsp?pdId=9392, though what I found had a cover over the top.  And was purple.  ;)
I'm one of those SMs who uses two binders, one for script/score and one for all other paperwork, and I thought this would be GREAT for all that other stuff.  Reasons:

  • Faster accessibility
  • Frequently accessed docments not tearing at the hole punch point
  • Easier to take something out to be photocopied or loaned.
  • Easier to pull out and look at two documents at once
  • It is its own carrying case.

I ended up not getting the tote because my script in it's binder wouldn't fit in it, as well, and I'm trying to REDUCE bag lady syndrome when I leave for the theatre.  But I'm sure such a beastie exists that my three ring binder would fit into.

Anyway, I thought I'd share.  Does anyone use a system like this, or see a major stumbling block to it that, in my enthusiasm, I'm missing?  Of course, it goes without saying that everything would still get 3-hole punched and added to the show book at the end of it all.
