The Green Room / Re: The things we give up for theatre
« on: Feb 03, 2013, 11:27 pm »
The list of things we give up for theatre is long and varied, and indicated above.

But remember, we also gave up long term security for the theatre.  How brave is that? (Pat yourself on the back.)

Here's the more important question:  What have you given up for theatre, that you regret giving up? If you had the chance to do it all over again, would you do it the same way?

Employment / Re: Theatre Aspen 2013 Summer Season - SM Request
« on: Feb 02, 2013, 11:15 am »
It may say "SM Request" on the top, but nothing in it says anything about Stage Managers. It's an ad for actors only. AND, isn't this VSM's regular gig, anyway?

Here's a better link: http://www.playbill.com/jobs/find/job_detail/49756.html

New news, 1:20pm, Saturday. I just had a conversation with their Artistic Director. The positions have been filled. AEA requires that they give SM information on where to send resumes.

I am not associated with this theater in anyway

Here's the link to the backstage action. The DSM begins calling about 11 minutes in.

I have never sent notes to actors, as above, after rehearsal, on a regular basis.  However, when it is requested by the Director, for example, to make a list of all changes made, say, on the day you first move to the stage, or in Tech., or in rehearsals during the preview period, I certainly do collate and prepare those, and post them and/or email them out, whichever the director prefers.

The Hardline / Re: EMC program Pros. vs. Cons
« on: Jan 28, 2013, 11:57 am »
The way I understand it, is this: Once you have your 50 weeks you can no longer works as a Non-AEA Actor or SM, in an AEA theatre that offers the EMC program, without being on contract. You are welcome to continue working Non-AEA in a Non-AEA venue, but your days of working in AEA theatres are over until you become a member.

It's been a while since I was EMC, but I remember that once you had accrued 50 weeks, you had to join upon signing your contract at the next AEA theatre. Does anyone know if this has this changed? I know there have been changes in right-to-work laws in recent years- has that affected the EMC requirements?

From the AEA website:
Upon completion of the program, your eligibility to join Equity lasts for five years. During that time, if you are
engaged to work at an Equity theatre, you must be signed to an Equity contract. If you do NOT choose to join
within the five-year period, your accumulated weeks of credit will expire, your registration fee will be forfeited, and
you will not receive the credit toward a future initiation fee.

Tools of the Trade / Re: Call Script Word Processor Mac App
« on: Jan 28, 2013, 11:54 am »
1.  The ability to remove all stage directions, Act and scene numbers, and anything else not actually "said" onstage.  Everything other than the actual dialogue (and page numbers) is just noise, and in my way.   For technically complicated shows, I then use the opposite page (left side) to notate what is going on backstage, or what the cues I am calling (for the rail and the deck) actually do. I need the ability to be able to use both sides of all pages.

2. I keep blocking and calling scripts totally separate. For the calling script, I put the text on the right side.

3. I put the cues in the right hand margin of the text page.  I need adjustable sized margins, or course!

4.I put page numbers on the upper left of the text page, away from the calling margin. I need the ability to make the page numbers match whatever is in the director's script, ie "5" or "I-5" or however the original script denotes the pages.

5.  I'd like a smorgasbord choice of shapes, lines, arrows, etc. so I can format different cues, standbys, etc. in different ways. I'm not a huge fan of color, except for cue lights, and I would need a way to indicate cue light on, and cue light off.

Here are some of my questions:

1. What are your general preferences are when creating a call script?
2. Do you keep your book on the left side or right side?
3. Do you like the cues on the left or right side of the text?
4. How do you notate your page numbers?
5. What shapes you like to use (any images are welcome)?

December Madness I: 2012 / Re: December Madness!
« on: Jan 05, 2013, 09:10 pm »
And, I think that's actually very fair. Both tools are very popular, and both tools win.  You know, paper isn't just the past, and the laptop isn't just the future. They both exist here and now, and we've all learned to make the two tools collaborate well, and to our benefit.  I think this poll had the best results possible, in all regards!

So I did some number crunching. The final match went to Paper by one vote and due to our structure of tournament-style this means that it technically won. However, if you look at all of the votes awarded over the course of the entire tournament it lost the popular vote to laptop by a landslide. In case you were curious about how the board ranked all 32 items based on total cumulative votes, here's the list.
Laptop                160
Paper                137

This job can be done without a laptop. And, although I would never want to do another show without one, I did many shows sans laptop, in my youth, and I've never done one without paper.  In fact, I challenge everyone who has never done a show without a computer to try it.  Paper, wins for me.

The Hardline / Re: straight-six on LORT musicals?
« on: Dec 11, 2012, 10:12 pm »
Thanks, Matthew! I was happy to investigate this, on behalf of all LORT SMs.

To all: Please keep in mind that this is how EQUITY will interpret the rule. Your mileage, with your manager/producer, may vary. ;)

The Hardline / Re: straight-six on LORT musicals?

So, we all remember this thread, yes?  In short there was disagreement amongst SMs as to whether the LORT 6 hour rehearsal option could be utilized in Musical productions. And also, there were different rulings on the question from different LORT Business Reps. So, I took the question to my local LORT Reps., who discussed it with their colleagues and also got different opinions. When it was clear that AEA did not have a single "point of view" on this matter, the query was referred to the Senior Business Rep., in charge of LORT. Well, I just got off the phone with AEA, and there has been a decision that should produce standardized rulings from LORT Business Reps. nationwide.

Drum roll, please............ The ruling is that the 6 hour rehearsal option DOES apply to musicals, as the 6 hour option, as written in the Rehearsal rule, is not in conflict with anything in the Musicals rule.  This is how all LORT Reps should be administering this rule, nationwide, in the future.

Please keep in mind two things: LORT negotiations are approaching, and anything can happen during the bargaining sessions. So who knows what these rules will look like in March.

Also, please keep in mind that this 6 hour option replaces 8 hours of rehearsal, so if it is actually used on a musical, the creative team could be out quite a few rehearsal hours.

That's the report. Any questions?

Off-topic in this forum, but if making watered down tea is driving you nuts, I have two words for you:  "Caramel coloring."

Lol, I just got home from calling a show that uses watered down tea as the liquor and coffee. Drives me nuts making it every night.
