The Green Room / Re: ARTICLE: How to say no
« on: May 10, 2011, 10:55 am »
Definitely a great article. Saying no is so necessary and so hard to do for me, luckily I have a good base of people to pass stuff onto, I always feel awful when I can't help in some way but being able to give other options makes me feel a lot better.

The Green Room / Re: The Stage Manager's Nightmare
« on: May 10, 2011, 10:50 am »
I don't have nightmares but I find that when things are a little more hairy than usual at rehearsals I will dream about the problem scene in the show over and over like an endless loop. I wake up so very tired and feel like I have worked all night long instead of sleeping. It doesn't scare me or make me any more stressed but it definitely keeps me from being well rested just when I need it most!

Yeah I  never have stage management or theatre "nightmares", my only theatre dreams are about seeing shows. But during tech weeks, I sleep so poorly because my mind just rolls over and over thinking about things, that when I wake up make no sense, but I am always semi-conscious and just trying to solve weird problems or answer questions or go over the same bit of blocking or lines over and over, I feel exhausted but mostly dumb in the morning for stressing in my sleep when I'm not even that stressed when awake.

The Green Room / Re: Achieving a Professional Understanding

This is less of a solution and more of a fact of life, but if you are lucky, or unfortunate in some cases, your friends will treat you like an SM outside of rehearsal. I actually wish this didn't happen but if you are struggling with maintain the the correct relationships it might be a good thing. Sometimes actors don't realize that SMing is a job that sometimes influences your life, rather than a complete way of life. In my case friends expect me to organize all outings, always be ontime, and be responsible for making sure people get home, etc. By nature I would do this anyway but it would be nice for it not to be expected, cause seriously who wants to be working 24 hours/day.

The Green Room / Re: Facebook Settings

I have used facebook as a great tool for SMing. I have seen facebook used to recast a role, and as great advertisement for a show, sometimes sending information or links to cast members it makes sure that they read it. Personally I am not  that paranoid about it but do have my privacy settings up so that certain things are private, but most thigns people can see, cause if you are too private it gets suspicious, but I never talk about work in posts unless it is a good thing. Also I try to make my life facebook approved, not being in bad pictures or even places where bad pictures are taken. It's worked so far, we'll see, my mind might change if I have a bad experience.

One of my favorite experiences in community theatre was being in the ensemble of a musical and having the director backstage on headset for each performance calling the cues, but I had similar experiences in high school were all the stage manager did was yell at people and sometimes call cues and pull the curtain, people just kind of figured out what needed to happen to make the show work, that's how I got into SMing by pulling all the weight and SM would do during performances I started to appreciate the backstage work more, the I realized it was a real job.

Our Producers are considering cancelling low attendane shows on the show I am currently working on, which is ridiculous since it is mostly students working on it , so even if only like 5 people show up they can pay all the professional actors. I prefer to do a show no matter what, even if it is a small house sometimes a small house can be your best house. I hope they don't cancel any.

Tools of the Trade / Re: iPads

I don't know if this works on the iPad but it does on the iPhone, so I assume, but the Scene Partner app is a cool new thing I saw at this year's SETC it's an exciting tool I would like to use, but I don't have an iPhone might be a reason to get one though.
