My parents didn't go to traditional college, so I was told at a very young age that I had to go to college.
When I left at 18 I was not mature enough to handle it. I went to school to be a high school history teacher. I then became a stage manager. It took college to realize what I was meant to do.
I felt guilty that I spent alot of my parents money for a useless degree, but if I didn't go I would never have known.
Hindsight I would have gone to community college and then transferred.

The Green Room / Re: Summer projects

I'm going into week 3 of stage managing my first opera. It's been......interesting.

So far I have learned that sming opera isn't that scary. However working for a young company and you're the only one with production experience is scary.

After this I'm going to spend the rest of the summer reading and relaxing.

I play Rock Band. So much fun to pretend that you're a rock star!

I saw a review on TV yesterday and they made one good point: it's not good for creating things, just good at looking at things that were created.

I'll wait for a few generations to come out before I consider getting one.

I was production assistant for Corpus Christi when it first premiered in NYC.
Bomb threats, bomb sniffing dogs, two forms of ID's became the norm.

Our favorite protester was a guy walking up and down the entrance door with a large cross. His cross had a wheel attached to the bottom, making it easier to "drag" the cross. I don't think Jesus had a wheel to help him.

The Green Room / Re: Best reason from an actor for being late

Scene: 15 minutes before student matinee for "Much Ado About Nothing". I noticed Don Jon still hasn't signed in.
I called his house. No answer. He also didn't carry a cell phone (this was back when people still made the choice to not have a cell phone)

I get a phone call in the booth

Actor: "Hi. I'm 20 minutes away. My car died. I had to walk 2 miles to get to a payphone. My wife is picking me up but she is 14 miles away."
Me: "um, ok. We will have someone covering for you when you arrive"
Actor: "I guess this is a bad time to say that I should get a cell phone"
Me: "Yes. You should get on that"

The artistic director did his role and the actor arrived 5 minutes after his final scene. He got a cell phone two days later.

The Green Room / Re: Best one-liner from a performance report

From a rehearsal report.

Director would like to have the feathers fall faster when they drop from the grid. Is this possible?

I've had my Equity card for 12 years and I'm in Grad School. I decided to go for the same reason you are going: to teach.
My unversity saw it as an advantage: they liked the fact that I had a few years of experience under my belt. I would be surprised if others saw it as a disadvantage. Besides, it's very difficult to find a teaching job without an MFA, so unversitites understand that.
I didn't have a problem with Equity, but contact your local office just in case.

Good luck!

Tools of the Trade / Re: THE Sharpie topic
« on: Feb 10, 2010, 11:55 am »
I just got an e-mail (yes, i get e-mail updates from Sharpie) about their new Stainless Steel Sharpie. It's actually a Sharpie that has a stainless steel barrel and ink refills. It looks kind of cool but my boyfriend's issue with his sharpies is when the tip gets smushed or not as clean he stops using them or "donates" them to the scene shop or someone lol.

It's gonna be available in March but they have limited edition pre-release ones on E-bay to raise money for charity.

I don't know if I'm sold on them because of the possible tip "smushing" issue...lol. Unless somehow they've designed a much sturdier tip to keep it's shape. We'll have to see...

Moderator edit: removed hyperlink as auction has expired - kmc307

I have a cup full of sharpies. Many of them I consider dead, due to the fact the tip is too smushed for my taste. I then go in my desk drawer that has boxes of sharpies and I get a fresh one.

If they came out with one that didn't smush, I would buy one (thousand) and then buy stock in the company.

The Hardline / Re: Half Hour Call
« on: Jan 11, 2010, 09:20 am »
I also love this puzzler.

Okay, it's tech.

Actors are called for a 12:00n Half-Hour Call, and then you start on stage at 12:30p to work (NOT RUN).  When is the first AEA break due?

I asked this question to my professor, (and a working professional sm) and he said that the break would be at 1:50. Now I'm all confused.

Has anyone asked Equity about this?

Two stories

Years ago I was run crew on a show in NYC that had a HUGE scene shift at intermission. Took about 20 minutes, had a pool, about 40 real rocks (yes, the director wanted real rocks) and about 15 people working on this shift.
In the middle of the shift one blue-haired kept yelling at the stage "Excuse Me? Excuse Me?" I was silly enough to pay attention to her and came downstage. She asks "Where is there a good place to go get something to eat?" I shrugged my shoulders and went back to my rocks.

Another time I was road manager for "A Christmas Carol" and I had to lead a Q+A session with some of the theatre's patrons. One adult asked me if the show ever opened for Metallica. You can't make this stuff up.

Employment / Where should I put it all???
« on: Sep 30, 2009, 04:58 pm »
Hi Everyone,

I'm having a problem with my resume. I have gone through all the resumes on the browsers with no success.

I have about 15 years experience as a stage manager/asm
I am currently working as a stage crew manager at a university (school of music)
I am currently stage managing shows towards my MFA.

Right now for my main stage manager resume, I have the normal list of shows/theatre/director.
Underneath it I have current experience and it's description. Is that too confusing?
Where should I put my school shows?

I will be more than happy to send my resume. I just don't know how to format it without it looking confusing.

I will appreciate any help I can get.

Went to amazon.com today and they have it in stock. How many pages does it fit? I always have to get the huge D-ring binders.

I don't know if this will answer your question, but I'm still planning to take my next step, despite the economy. It's just going to take me longer than usual. This economy will not last forever, but my plans will.
