Using a prop from one show for another after saying people shouldn't touch them (it's not your prop for the show you're SMing- keep them separate!) was probably not a great choice. And being passive-aggressive about other props afterwards? It doesn't exactly make you look MORE professional. But it happens to the best of us! Stage managers have feelings too.
I try to stay calm, collected, stern but friendly. As you probably know, being nicer can get you much further than barking orders, so I hold onto that as much as I can. Project firm but friendly and then complain on the phone to your friend.
Taking a step out of the room for a minute or so can help, and after rehearsal or on a break (give everyone time to cool down!) pull him/her aside and talk about it. One-on-one discussions are definitely better than a confrontation in a room full of people.

I will NOT be working! For the first time in a while. But I'll be having a Halloween party with cast/crew from the show I did around last Halloween, in a show where the final scene took place on Halloween day.

I think it's an excellent idea as long as you're sure they're committed. The students you find may not (probably won't) have a lot of experience, but if they're excited and interested it'll be much easier in the long run. I think of them more like a trainee than an ASM.

My last theater had a great little handout that counted down to opening: what should be accomplished by the monday before opening, 2 weeks before, 3 weeks, etc...I found it very helpful.

Just had the first read for my next show- Three Sisters at The Atlantic Theater. I'll be working with 3rd-year NYU acting students in the production, plus four (four!) 1st-year ASMs. In addition to evening rehearsals, I'll be sitting in on one production class a week with them, plus training the ASMs. I'm a little amused, as I went to a small liberal arts college that didn't even offer a stage management class (everything I know I learned from other SMs and books) and now I'm being paid to attend a class in a theater conservatory!

Happiness is....
...hitting up the back-to-school sales at the office supply stores (I found 24 sharpies for $10! Packs of mechanical pencils for $1!)
...the first laugh on opening night.
...FINALLY going home after a full tech day.
