The Green Room / Re: Summer projects
« on: Jun 24, 2010, 03:43 pm »
I am in the process of finishing our last show of the 2009-2010 season and starting up the 2010 summer season, which opens in 2 weeks. We have The Late Christopher Bean, followed by The Foreigner.  Should be a very funny summer.

Currently though, our theatre is going through some craaaazy renovations.  Before, our dressing room space was a very tall room (the height of the building) that was also used as storage. Now, it's a finished space with tables and mirrors below, with storage space and air handlers for our new AC system above...I don't know if I could take another summer in that heat! Very exciting times.

Other than theatre, I'm living in Providence and hopefully going to the beach more than twice...that was the total for last summer unfortunately...  Maybe get some golfing and outdoorsy stuff as well.

The Green Room / Re: Vacation Fantasies?

Where DON'T I want to go???

Agreed! I am young (23) and have only been on a few select family trips so I find intrigue in every vacation idea.  My girlfriend went to Sicily a few years back and I found myself drooling over the pictures...so beautiful!

I have a pair of West Marine sailing gloves...I recommend them to everyone.  They were $15.  For work that entails some fly work and heavy lifting, I have a pair of Mechanix gloves I bought at Ocean State Job Lot for $5...great deal. They save my hands.

1) - 4): It doesn't really matter, as I am open to everything.
5) +6): I do prefer to plan ahead (although not too much) and prefer a good hotel.

I am totally open to every suggestion and like hearing about different options.

The Green Room / Vacation Suggestions
« on: Jun 08, 2010, 03:54 pm »
Hello all,
So I am looking to take my first vacation in...6 years or so...this winter.  I was wondering if anyone has any good suggestions - they don't necessarily have to be theatre-oriented vacations, but I am looking to see what folks like myself enjoy when taking a few weeks to breathe.

I have done somewhere around 16 shows including ASM, PSM, PM, and APM. PSMing alone, 8 shows (2 collegiate, 6 professional).

Lighting, sound, website, construction crew, AD, SM, ASM...like Mac Calder: Operations Manager at my venue.

If all the world's a stage, I can't even imagine the prompt book that goes with it...

Snow...lots of snow...well maybe not that much, but enough to make the entire state of RI drive like: a jittery teenager who just got their permit/a stereotypical elderly person/insert your idea of a bad driver here.... Even though I like driving in the snow, it didn't stop my car from lodging itself into a snow bank on the way home from getting some iced coffee the morning after the blizzard...but I digress.  We extended the run of the show as to allow people to reschedule.

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: HEALTH: Injured actor

Let me preface by stating I am not a medical professional in any sense...but as soon as I read "severe concussion" I immediately thought letting this actor continue was a bad idea.  Although I have no training, I know concussions of severe nature are not to be taken lightly or something that should be left up to the afflicted individual.  A doctor's recommendation should always be the deciding factor.  Just look at some of the information you can find on the web about concussions.

Please let us know how it all turns out!

At my current job, the green room and changing room are one in the same.  So all the costume and space for relaxing during the show are in this back room.

As far as costume policies go, I think it really depends on the costume designer/wardrobe supervisor.  Our costume designer in college would have had a fit if he caught you with anything other than water....god forbid you were outside smoking.  My current costume designer could care less either way.  But regardless of which one you have, it's their preference and they have the right to dictate policy in regards to costumes.  If they want to take the risk of letting someone eat a meatball sub in a Victorian era costume, that's their choice and ultimately their responsibility to get the stain out.  It's also up to actors and management to bring common sense into play if you do have a laid-back designer/supervisor.  You should have a respect for the costumes.

Tools of the Trade / Re: iPad: What do you think?

This was previewed recently: slate device by HP....seems like a great time to release a preview for a device that will probably cost less than an iPad and adds what it is lacking as well (USB, 2 cameras, supports Flash...).  I think the term "missing link" fits this product a little more.

Any thoughts?  Anyone out there with an iPad have any first hand reviews?

I can't ever see myself taking blocking with a laptop.  Pencil and script is muuuch faster for me.  However, I find having a laptop, at my current position, quite helpful during rehearsal. I have my script typed up so I usually find it easier to be on book with a laptop.  The find function especially comes in handy when trying to find a place in the script a few pages back.  I also use the post-it notes function (Stickies on my work Mac) to take notes.  As MatthewShiner does state, it can be distracting at times, so self-control is paramount.

There's always the good-ole peanut butter (& fluff in my case) and leftover pasta.

Does the peanut butter and fluff go in the pasta???
