The stage and ALL backstage areas (wing space, pit, crossover, trap room, hallway to the dressing rooms, & any other nooks & crannies) have bright, non-fluorescent worklights controlled by easily accessible and clearly labeled switches, so that when working backstage in non-show conditions, there is adequate light to read paperwork, label props tables, sweep the floor, etc.

Introductions / Re: High school stage manager, craving to learn
« on: Jul 03, 2012, 03:55 pm »
Welcome!  It's great that you're so passionate already.  No one in my high school (including me) even knew what a stage manager was, so you've got a leg up on a lot of people already.
Check out this thread ( http://smnetwork.org/forum/tools-of-the-trade/stage-manager-booksmanuals/msg28999/#msg28999 ) about Stage Management textbooks & manuals- a lot of times SMs in high school end up doing so much more than what is strictly the SM's job (not that that's a bad thing!), it might be helpful for you to have some perspective on how things differ out in the real world.

The Green Room / Re: 54 uses for Binder clips

We're using the really massive jumbo-sized ones to dress our soft goods right now. No gator clips in sight and the two masking pieces won't stay together? Binder clips to the rescue!

Uploaded Forms / Re: Slip Sheets
« on: Jun 20, 2012, 03:36 pm »
My slip sheet that I use when ASMing, as I'm not concerned with every piece of blocking- just entrances & exits, prop & costume tracking, etc.  I based the format on one that another SM I interned with used- I thought it was great. I emptied out the "key" section before I uploaded it, but I typically type in the actor or character names & the abbreviation I'm using for each. I change the boxes in the middle depending on the needs of the show & what I'm focused on tracking in rehearsal.  I made the table in Word originally, I like the ability to manipulate cells individually without changing the rest of the table.

Picking up a broom to sweep the deck and the broom has more dirt on it than the deck did.  Leaving a trail of sawdust behind the broom is THE WORST.

How does Samuel die? Are there weapons involved? Do we need to consult a fight director?  Do we have the budget to hire a fight director? Will there be a blood effect? Does the actor have any allergies that we should be aware of for making the blood? Is costumes aware of the potential for needing to double his costume or do extra laundry due to the blood?
Since we are cutting the six page monologue, what effect does this have on timing backstage? Do any costumes need to be quick-rigged now that were not before? Do we have time to track & prep necessary props/scenic pieces backstage since the time is now so much shorter?

NEW NOTE:  Stephen has requested a cigarette for when he is playing the "Starving Artist" character on page 46-48.

Wait wait wait. (SPOILERS) Debra Messing's character is preggers, and neither of her potential baby-daddy's is returning for season 2? How is that going to work out?!

End of the month sounds good to me!

There will be windows in the rehearsal room to provide natural light, and functional blinds/shades that are easily operable and never get stuck!

The rehearsal room floor will be made of a material that takes well to spike tape, withstands abuse by tap shoes, and most importantly, is laid down in 1 foot by 1 foot squares.

There is some series of detective novels featuring a British stage manager: now that would make scintillating television!

Do you know the name of this detective series?

I just googled it- I think it sounds like the Nicholas Bracewell mysteries by Keith Miles, writing under the pseudonym Edward Marston.

To quote Wikipedia:
"In 1988, Miles began another series, set in the theatrical world of Elizabethan London. For this series, and for most of his subsequent writing, he adopted the pseudonym Edward Marston, the name reflecting that of a real Elizabethan playwright, John Marston. The series features a fictional theatrical company, Westfield's Men, and, in particular, Nicholas Bracewell, its book-holder, a position similar to that of the modern stage manager."

Also according to Wikipedia, there are 16 novels in this series!  I know what my next kindle purchase will be...

My Worst Thing of the moment?  When Microsoft Office auto-formats hyperlinks.  I have literally never in my life typed an email address in a document and actually WANTED it to be a hyperlink.  Contact sheets are the worst.
