The Green Room / Re: Happy New Year SM Network
« on: Jan 01, 2012, 02:28 am »
1. Do more networking. (My goal last year was to create a stronger web presence- now to keep working that!)
2. Be healthier. (Better to my mind/body- it's an ongoing process.)

I've begun working with my ipad in rehearsal to assist in note-taking, paperwork, etc, but I can't imagine having my entire script with blocking/cue in it on there. Too scary for me!

On the other hand, my handwriting is small but can get terrible...

The Green Room / Re: ARTICLE: Confessions of a Serial Intern
« on: Dec 23, 2011, 08:20 pm »
I interned once and it was an invaluable experience, especially as someone whose SM experience before that was limited to 1 undergrad course and being self-taught. Roughly halfway through the season, one of the ASMs left, and I was put into his track...and discovered we had been doing nearly the exact same job, though he was paid considerably more. (I never got the pay increase, which is another story.) I know luck was a lot of the reason I got the job, but the similarity between being the intern and being the ASM bothered me so much I decided never to intern again.

One or two internships I can totally understand, especially if you're still learning, but seven makes me wonder what she was getting out of it, if not money or job connections.

Grapefruit seed oil is incredibly bitter, but a few drops of that in a glass of OJ is a great boost for the immune system. You can find it in most vitamin stores.

I worked on a bad show that had a complicated cue sequence that went off a text message alert. Of course, it's the standard iphone text sound. It took a while to not have a momentary panic when someone else's phone went off.

I once worked in a space where the sound op (on the other side of the venue) had a blue clip light, run with extension cords all the way to the booth, plugged in to a power strip in the booth. I could click the power strip on for standby (turning on the blue light) and then flick it back off to call the cue.

On a similar note (perhaps LizzG can advise)- a friend just booked his first tour, starting in Jan. Any gift ideas?

The Green Room / The Great SM Gift List
« on: Nov 15, 2011, 03:03 pm »
The gift-giving season is rapidly approaching...anything you're hoping for? Gift ideas for SM friends?

Personally, I'm hoping for an ipad. I'm digitizing my work more and more and think it'd be helpful in the rehearsal room.

I'm knitting many scarves for my friends (I forgot what a great stress-reliever knitting is).

Last year I got a cousin who recently graduated high school and was off to study stage management a great, sturdy messenger bag with many pockets that he said was very useful. :)

My parents are my biggest fans. They let me call and rant and worry, then pick up their handy Dictionary of the Theater and look up the words they didn't know. :) They assume if I don't call it must be tech, and are ok with a 7am phone call. They always have the address of the theater I'm working in to send flowers or a card for opening night.

My friend (and occasional coworker/set designer) who will go on break and return with two coffees and a pack of cookies without prompting.

My younger cousin, a 15-yr-old self-proclaimed theater dork, who puts everything into perspective. When she came to see a recent show I did, she was THRILLED to sit through load-in because it was "so cool." Right, not everybody has a job like this. It IS pretty cool.

No, it's not "bullsh*t"
to ask why you've decided
you don't need rehearsing.
