I type my scripts too, and I ended up just writing in the script page numbers in the margins. Annoying, but it got the job done.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Injured during tech?
« on: Mar 05, 2007, 01:35 am »
I'm wondering:

Has anyone ever been hurt during tech week? How did you deal with it? (I'm more wondering about in college, where there's no professional support system, just a bunch of other kids.)

My story: today (first day of tech, 14-hour day) I was kneeling in the shop, working on a flat, and my set designer was behind me fixing a subway seat or something. She pried something off of it, which flew into my back (next to my spine) with enough force to knock me forward. I spent most of the day on my back on the couch in the green room, unable to do anything useful (hell, I could barely stand up, owwww).

I was really frustrated because I felt like I couldn't manage properly at all, and I hated the thought of leaving during such an important day. I know that health and safety always comes first (my mantra during tech!), but I've never had anything like this happen to me before, and it threw me for a loop. (Not to mention my back still hurts :(...)

(It didn't help that my ASM doesn't really know what she's doing, so I couldn't just leave it in her hands.)

Has anything like this ever happened to any of you?

It's a show called A Devil Inside by David Lindsay-Abaire...some of the actors have more downtime than others. I have to take a look at the scene plot with my ASM to figure out who will be able to help when...

College production. We go into tech on Sunday (as in, two days from now) and the two guys who said they would do run crew (we only really need a crew of three - them plus the ASM) backed out today. Throwing me into a frenzy of phone calls to anyone I can think of, but the answer has been no, no, no so far.

Last semester on the show I worked on, no one could do run crew and we ended up making the actors do it. It worked pretty well, but sucked for the actors.

The scene changes in this show are very small: I think the most involved one is moving on a set of subway seats. So the advice I need is this:

Go crazy continuing to make dozens of phone calls and sending a million emails looking for people? Or, use the actors since the scene changes are really uninvolved anyway?

I'm leaning towards actors, but I'd really like to know what you all think.

Does anyone know how long an unopened container will last, though?  I bought a small container 2-3 weeks ago, haven't opened it yet, just sitting in my fridge.  It should still be good, right?

If it's unopened, it should be okay. I've kept it that long and it's been fine.

The Sag one doesn't fit me that well either, but the whole thing is still pretty entertaining, thanks for sharing! (Also, it did get one thing right - I am an actor too!)

Thanks! I meant the third one.

I've seen the term thrown around but I have no idea what it means.

Thanks!

Yeah, I agree it's a pain, but it's also a pain when actors show up late every day...

I told them flat out that it would be the result if they were late a lot, so it's their own fault if they have to do it  :P

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: No Smoking in Denver

LJH beat me to posting that NY times article. One interesting thing that it pointed out is that smaller productions have gotten away with using cigarettes or herbal cigarettes anyway without repurcussion.

Had my second rehearsal tonight as a bonafide stage manager (last semester I ASMed). And you'd think with all the time I spend lurking around these boards that I wouldn't have made the two small mistakes that I made tonight.

First, I only had one pencil, and of COURSE one of my actors needed one.

And...I forgot to call breaks :(

Ah well! Lesson learned!

My favorite way to punish people for being consistantly late to rehearsal (it's college so I can't just fire them) is to make them be light walkers.

Retractable Sharpies are God's gift to stage managers. I use mine for almost everything...and I really hate the times that I can't use it, like for writing blocking, etc.

...If I could live in a Staples, I would. ;)
