As far as interaction with dancers- If you've been a dancer you know how independant dancers are. Dancers are far far far more able to take care of themselves than actors. I suggest speaking with the choreographers and asking them exactly how much monitoring they'd like you to do. Once you're into tech rehearsals the dancers do need to sign-in, call in etc... but previous to that the choreographer will let you know how much they want to see you in the studio. MERDE!

There's a thread about notation in the 'other' catergory, I think?

I always say do what makes sense to you! Score, Diagrams, terms... I actually do a combination of all the above...

Taking dance notation is not an easy task (unless you know Laban!) so I pass you a heart-felt MERDE! (which means break a leg, also a thread in the 'other' catergory.. another weird dancer thing, I guess!)

Wow! I'm totally jealous- I never got housing when I was an Intern! 

Now, I usually pay Interns, ASMs. Apprentices etc... minimum about $10 per hour. It usually ends up being around $300 per week for ASMs, and $200 for Interns/ Production Assts.

This has nothing to do with their EMC status (or AGMA.)

I think when I first started getting my EMC (back in '94) I was paid $225 per week. And I know I worked for $100 per week a few times as EMC as well... I don't think AEA watches what you get paid untill you're a full member.

The ballet's annual fashion show is in 4 weeks- It's always fun to see if I can keep up!

I tend to have large crews of folks who are out of town for large portions of rehearsal periods- so in the case of out-of-towners or heavy email users I'll email.

On the other hand bunches of my staff don't really know how to use their computers... so they get hard copies of everything.

Also- my server at the ballet goes down on a very regular basis which leads to badness. I'm in favor of hard copies in general- maybe I'm old school?

So- if say I post something that someone doesn't like they get to SMITE me. Really? SMITE?

Isn't that a bit extreme...? Smite-ing seems a bit I don't know-  biblical? jeepers.

ASM's are wonderful creatures! 

My ASM's tend to eventually take care of running music, prop tracking, line notes, change overs... and errand running!

In light rehearsal times they also record blocking, record running times etc...

ASM's can make or break a stage management staff- it is important that they feel useful and not over-worked.

I think most of us probably begin as performers? yes? 

I was a professional dancer who got injured and so I had to go to college  (which is exactly how dancers think of it- HAVING to go to college) so I looked around my ballet company and thought "Well, I can't dance anymore- what should I do now?" 

(Please let's all note that I never thought hey! I could be a teacher/ policewoman/ architect...)

And so the Stage Manager seemed to be having fun being all connected to the dance, and yet not actually dancing... hmmm...

So I found a college that offered Stage Management as a Major and voila- Here I am! A Stage Manager who knows dance!
