Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: Dressing For The Part?

random thought...i just bought a pair of black scrubs that i was thought would make comfortable asm attire...has anyone ever tried them?

Scrubs are great - super comfortable - but no pockets, usually, which can suck. Do yours have them?

I have a pair (not black) that I paint in, they are fantastic for long days. (I wouldn't do construction or anything like that in them, though.)

I agree with previous posters - it's your job to be concerned with safety, and this sounds like it's worth bringing up.

I think that calling a show takes some artistic vision. It's hard to explain how, but I think we all know that it's more than just saying "go" when the script tells you to.

Also, as my stage management professor would say, being able to communicate effectively with all the different personality types that you find in theater is an art.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: SMing children!

Definitely take advantage of the fact that you'll have older teenagers as well as kids - I'm not saying you should get them to babysit or anything, but having older kids around as role models is a good thing.

I'm SMing kids this summer too - good luck!

I don't know what you're budget's like, but here is a site that sells breakaway martini glasses (among other things) for $20 a pop.

Good luck!

I've never used Google groups, but I love using Google calendar to keep my cast and crew updated about the rehearsal schedule. You can set it up to give you a web address that has the calendar, so no one has to have a Google account to view it (you need one to post things, though).

A few years ago friend of mine had a similar situation in a show she was SMing, except it was a shotgun.  The shotgun was not a stage gun, it was an actual shotgun.

A little off-topic, but why on earth couldn't they have just used a stage gun?

What's the reasoning behind wearing blacks to anything but tech rehearsals and performances?

Does anyone else carry the Stage Manager's prop?

Maybe I'm ignorant, but what do you mean?

SMNetwork Archives / Re: Stress and Eating Right

I think eating right in college is all about good planning. You know you have to eat, so don't get stuck being forced to eat a vending machine dinner - always be prepared with something healthier.

The trick is to figure out which instant/quick food is better for you, and make an effort to eat that instead of the bad stuff. Personally, I eat a lot of frozen dinners, but I buy the organic ones that are actually healthy. It's worth the few extra bucks, trust me.

I also bring fruit to rehearsal to snack on instead of chips or whatever. And I drink juice instead of soda. Protien bars instead of candy - you get the idea.

Also, taking a multivitamin daily makes you feel surprisingly great!

you could always put a little piece of velcro in between the folds.

Can you imagine the actor opening the carton, accompanied by that sound of pulling velcro apart? ...hehehe.

I think the paper clip idea is a really good one, though.

What about double-sided tape - assuming they make double-sided tape strong enough to actually hold it closed - holding the carton closed from the inside (on the top part)? Then the actor could kind of peel it open.

Thanks all - we ended up with the ASM and one very awesome volunteer being able to do most of it with some actor help - it worked out very well in the end!

Employment / Re: resume format
« on: Mar 12, 2007, 03:57 am »
I've got a resume question.

I'm doing an internship this summer where I'll be ASMing three or four shows in a row at a professional theater.

On my resume, do I list: a) just the internship, under "Training" or something like that; b) the internship under "Training" and also list each show separately under "Stage Management"; or c) just the shows?
