I just built my site. I registered my domain and hosting through namecheap.com. Under there c-panel (which namecheap will give you the log-in and such when you register) I used Wordpress that I installed from the panel. It was surprisingly easy, as I am not a web developer at all. I paid 57 dollars for the year and wordpress was free. There was some coding I did to add PDFs of my resume and paperwork samples. If you need that code, feel free to message me and I can talk you through it a bit. If you use a wordpress template, I suggest disabling the comments. Don't upload any pictures until you disable them, or people can comment on your pictures.

If you want to see what I did on wordpress, my website is mandalynstevens.com (the picture of myself is being changed as soon as I get my head shots)

It wasn't too bad, and I am very happy with my site.

The Green Room / Re: Movies to musicals
« on: Feb 24, 2014, 01:37 pm »
I have to admit, I was excited to see Heathers was coming into musical form. This from a person who doesn't prefer musicals over straight plays. However, that movie was an awesome movie and I remember it fondly as a teenager, why not bring something out from obscurity and revive it? Think about the movie Kinky Boots, how many people actually saw it in theaters are at home? Now because it is out there again and in a bigger form, the message it brings comes with it. I dont think our profession is simply to entertain, but also to enlighten and educate. If we can use movies that people have somewhat forgotten and put a campy musical moral into it, great! These can be used as great education tools. Heathers is about bullying, which is a big deal right now. Kinky Boots- acceptance of something different, Back to the Future- living life to the fullest.. Why Not bring these morals back in a fun entertaining way that people will pay money (and our salaries) to enjoy? I don't think everything has to be a negative. We have to look at the positives!

Thank you! I'll definitely take a look. I've been going through this thread checking out all of the websites. It's very helpful. What site did you use to create it?

I appreciate you breaking that down for me Dart, I'm going to do some research about google voice and see how it will work for me. I think I'd feel much better not plastering my personal cell around the world as well. I have a bad habit of not saving people's numbers in my phone and I imagine the google voice process could very well break that habit. Thanks again for the specific information! It helps a lot.

Do you suggest having a business line through Google Voice? Do you use your personal cell for everything?

He had us look through others websites and I personally like the look of an introduction picture. I agree that it puts a personal touch on it. Some I've seen are very forced and some look great. My prof isn't giving us specifics, he is trying to get us to make these choices ourselves and as this is an extension of myself, a picture might be a good idea.

Hello!
Ive been reading through this thread as I am about to build my website as part of a resume and portfolio assignment. My biggest question is about my bio. What sort of picture should I include of myself? I dont want a serious picture, as I am not a serious person; but I am worried that a funny one will look forced. Any suggestions? I feel that I am not a very good picture taker and I want people to feel welcome at my page.

Honestly, any suggestions regarding a stage managers website will be helpful!

This topic has just come up in my portfolio and resume class at school. I hold firm to my phone number that Ive had for 10 years. Being as my "brand" is educational theatre I feel that my Ohio phone number represents who I am. I am a midwestern girl born and raised and I feel that changing my number to a city I haven't been to seems outrageous. This thread is a bit older, but I searched and wanted to see if anyone has encountered this recently. I really don't see myself changing my phone number.

I would love to work in a small university, somewhere I can work with everyone. I do love stage management and the practicum of it, but I also enjoy the teaching aspect. I do know that I need more professional experience to be able to have sustainable career in education, so I am working on both. Its a process.

I know plenty of stage managers that direct as well. They are both so connected that it is a logical jump. Personally, I have no desire to be that vocal in a rehearsal! However, I do love the sound of my own voice!

mibrook2,
I love the idea of teaching something that I love. My main goal is to find a job that I get to stage manage, teach, advise, and learn. (Sounds greedy!) But I want to teach and get the practicum of theatre. It is important to maintain working in theatre while you teach so you are up to date as well.

Thanks for the question! I just love teaching :)

Welcome! I am, as well, a student in stage management. This is a great forum for academic stage managers. So much to learn! I have taken to the forms tab while I figure out my own stage management style, it is a great tool. I am just now working on finding my "brand" considering my career, so I suggest you start now! Turns out, my brand is educational theatre. Welcome, again, to the forum. I look forward to more trivia!
