Tools of the Trade / Re: Favorite Bag
« on: Feb 15, 2012, 01:24 am »
I recently purchased an all-black "Eminence Tote" from The North Face. As a college student, the $75 (including shipping) was a little steep for me, but it has definitely been worth it. As of today, I am comfortably carrying a 15" MacBook Pro, a travel umbrella, fleece jacket, 3" binder, assortment of lip balm/earbuds/mints/powerbars/other small goodies, bag-o'-writing utensils/post-its, and full-size laptop charger... And I have a bit of room to spare! The bag has a laptop compartment, several zippered pockets both inside and out, and a few other small good-to-have features.

The best part of this bag, in my opinion? 100% recycled fabric that's super sturdy and dirt-resistant.

I know there is a thread re: business cards elsewhere on the site, but I am interested to hear thoughts on students having business cards.

Good idea, bad idea? What information should a student include on their cards if they have them? What should they use as a job title ("Stage Manager", "Student Stage Manager", "Stage Management Student", etc)?

If you don't think students should have business cards (or if it's not worth it for some reason), how would you recommend that a student leaves their information with others (especially when at conferences/networking events)?

Any/all thoughts and advice appreciated.

The Green Room / Re: The Stage Manager's Nightmare

I have a recurring nightmare about a "Techie Musical" (this started happening back in high school). The techs were the cast, and the regular cast was the tech crew. Scary.

Employment / Re: Civilian Jobs?
« on: Apr 25, 2011, 03:06 pm »
I'm really just looking for options to keep in the back of my mind. My family, while supportive of my decision to leave "real college" and go to school for SM, they are concerned about what I can/will do once I settle down/can't support a family with the erratic pay/can't find jobs/etc. They won't stop talking about it, so it has put a nugget of curiosity in my head. That's all. Also, it's interesting to see where former SM's have ended up, especially if there turns out to be a couple of more popular fields.

Employment / Civilian Jobs?
« on: Apr 25, 2011, 12:00 am »
I'm going to be studying stage management in college starting this fall, but I know that the gigs won't come my way forever/I'll eventually want to settle down and may not be able to find gigs.

That being said, what civilian jobs have seasoned SMs held?
