I use PQ for projection cues.  My college uses PowerPoint for projections during productions.  Sound is run separately from projections.

The Green Room / Re: Reading Plays

What about some more recent plays?  David Auburn, David Lindsay-Abaire, Neil LaBute, Nicky Silver, Paul Rudnick, Sarah Ruhl, and Martin McDonagh would be a few contemporary playwrights to check out.  I try to keep up on the current stuff by reading ones nominated for the Pulitzer or Best Play at the Tony Awards.  These websites have the lists of the nominees and winners:  http://www.pulitzer.org/bycat/Drama and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Award_for_Best_Play

I really like Essentials of Stage Management by Peter Maccoy.  I found this book helpful because it included management philosophy.  He writes about how the actors' needs change through the rehearsal process and how that affects the job of the stage manager.

I am looking at CCM for grad school right now.  None of the MFA programs require GRE scores.

Thanks for sharing this website.  I wouldn't have thought about using white glue over spike tape to keep it in place.  I can't wait to try that out on my next show.

I recently stage managed The Shape of Things and we ended up using red hairspray for spray paint.  We needed the "spray paint" to wash out of the lining of a jacket after every performance.  The hairspray worked great.  We bought ours at Sally's.

I was recently at Pier One Imports and they had a lot of Knock Knock brand office supplies.  I bought some of their notepads :)

Hi Ryan,

Are you looking for a stage management BFA program or a theatre BA program?

Hi Lauren,

I feel like I'm in the same boat as you about coming from a school that has a small program.  Most theatre people have not heard of the college I go to except within our KCACTF region since we hosted the festival for two years.  The program at my school has been around for awhile but it has just recently began expanding.  Next year we will have double the number of theatre majors with incoming freshmen.  The good thing about being in a small program is that I get the chance to stage manage multiple shows a year.  I'm also worried about grad school since I there are not any professional theatre companies nearby.  I'm not sure if grad schools would be impressed by stage managing for community theatre so I've avoided that near SVSU.

Also, I've heard of business majors going into stage management.  One of the stage managers from my school took a lot of business classes to focus on that side of the job.

Best of luck,
Sarah

I found this website really helpful.  I used it to find out which school offered MFA stage management programs.  Mike Lawler also has a book on technical theatre jobs.

I make sure to keep a little something for myself in my kit.  I like to stock up on peanut m&ms.  It's a quick energy booster plus a pre-show treat : )
