What about spray chalk?  I've never used it before, but I can't imagine that it would give off a lot of fumes.  It also has an added bonus of being washable!

You could try hardware/craft stores or check online.  I found some at this website. http://www.toolup.com/paint-and-sundries.aspx?viewall=true

I also found a recipe online that might work, though I'm not sure that a plant mister would be the best replacement for a spray paint can:

You will need:
4 Tablespoons cornstarch
1 Cup warm water
4-6 frops food coloring
1 small plant mister

How to Concoct it:
1. Mix all ingredients together in a medium bowl.
2. Pour the spray chalk mixture into a small plant mister. Shake and spray.
3. Avoid clogging by shaking the paint mister before each use.

The Green Room / Re: Do you add a personal touch to your booth?
« on: May 02, 2011, 12:40 pm »
I've discovered a small buddha statue and a creepy cobra statue in the tiny booth i'm currently occupying left behind by a former occupant.  There's not really room for much else (at the moment, I'm calling the show with my script in my lap because there's no place else to put it....).. but I might look into something 2-dimensional for the walls that's a little more personal.

College and Graduate Studies / Re: MFA vs MA
« on: Apr 26, 2011, 11:06 am »
Typically, you need a terminal degree to teach at a university.  An MFA is terminal, an MA is not.  With an MA, your partner will most likely need to continue on and get a PHD.  I'm not sure if all universities work this way, but I'm pretty sure most of them do.

I just got one of those Jamie Raquel file totes and I love it!  Thanks for the recommendation!  (I also plan on getting my sister one for her birthday.)  Now if only I could afford one in every color...... haha  ;D

Last week, my rehearsal report included the following:

"We need a cardboard cutout of the Pope for [the actress] to polka with."

The Green Room / Re: Is permanent marker okay?
« on: Mar 23, 2011, 04:30 pm »
agreed.  chalk or pencil would be best.  permanent marker is hard to correct and difficult to cover as SMrose said.

is there a reason the TD wanted to use permanent marker?

Tools of the Trade / Re: Information access barriers

I've noticed an increasing number of websites allowing you access through Facebook.  i.e. using your facebook login information to access their site.  Additionally, most new smartphones will let you import contact information directly from Facebook, so your Facebook friends become part of your contact list.  While this isn't necessarily SM specific, I think it shows that the possibility exists to utilize this type of pre-existing information.  (Though I'm not necessarily sure what one has to do to gain access to this - probably give Facebook lots of money - and I know there a lot of security concerns with Facebook and their privacy issues - I for one do not have my phone number listed on my Facebook account.)  The number of people who have Facebook is rapidly growing, so this could be a way in, if you could figure out how to make it work for you.

That being said, while it might be possible to utilize this type of technology, I'm just not sure if there is an easy way to make it work on such an individual and personalized basis.

To be more specific, the last show I worked on was at a small theatre.  There was a lightboard op (who was responsible for his own queues, but whom I didn't really trust) and me backstage moving props/furniture and wrangling children and dogs.  (It was a production of Annie).  So I didn't really feel comfortable foregoing my script entirely for run sheets (Though I did have runsheets posted for the actors who moved set pieces).  I ended up scribbling a lot of notes about what needed to happen when in my script.  I'd never encountered this before, so I just went with what seemed to work at the time;  looking back, it just wasn't as organized as I would have liked.

Besides your standard light, sound, fly, etc. cues that one usually puts in their calling script, what other kinds of information/cues wind up in your book when you find yourself backstage (or anywhere not in the booth calling cues)?  Do you tend to format these cues in the same manner as if you were calling them?  (i.e. with standbys, cue numbers, etc.)  For example, if you are responsible for moving a chair onstage, do you prefer to simply make a notation that the chair moves onstage to x location or incorporate it into cues like "standby set Q11", "set Q11 go" and then have a description of set Q11 on a separate list with any details, where it goes, etc.

I'm mainly curious in finding a good way to set up your prompt book when you aren't calling the show, so that if you needed to hand off your prompt book to someone else, it would be easy to follow.  I'm also interested to hear what kind of weird or often overlooked items that people like to include.

I never thought of using my cell phone for checklists.  That's a great idea!

like missliz, i definitely splurge on the coffee front during tech.  I find that drinking coffee that doesn't taste like cardboard (like the coffee in my office) is a nice treat.  I particularly enjoy tech weeks that fall during holiday flavor seasons at starbucks... pumpkin and caramel brulee lattes are definitely my favorite!

Laundry... sleep... clean off the DVR/catch up on my favorite tv shows that have not survived the DVR because i've been been out of touch with reality for too long (thanks hulu!)... enjoy home-cooked meals... spend time with my boyfriend, friends, family, and kitty.

and like tempest_gypsy... relish in the fact that I'm only working one job!

(but if said period of time is rather lengthy... then i'll indulge in some video games... find some fun craft project... see a show i'm not working on... travel somewhere fun... etc.)
