I insist on paper techs for tech-heavy shows. I find they make the actual tech run so much smoother, even if things are changing once you're in the room. It's just another way to make sure everyone is generally on the same page.

Now, on a show with lights up lights down, a couple basic SQs (doorbell, phone ring)...I think they're less necessary.

We had our show Fri night and performed to a whopping audience of 10. Cast and crew were able to get there fine, but my ASM couldn't get a bus home to Jersey so she stayed over with me!

Love the interview - can't wait to see what she alludes to as far as 'stage manager breakdown.'

The show itself feels like it had way too many 'insider' nudges in the two hours last night... name dropping, cameos, etc. Fun and whatnot for the NYC theater folk, but not sure if the rest of the country appreciates the references.

... although I did see it was a record low in ratings last night, so maybe NYC is the only demographic watching?

Moving from Monday nights to Tuesdays probably cut down on the theater folk who are able to watch the show, too.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: Stage Manager Pay

Pay can vary. As for if it's worth it? I think you're going to get a biased answer, since this is a stage management forum.

If it excites you, and motivates you enough to pursue even when it's tough, then yes, it's worth it.

Thanksgivings at home, a few weddings, and the most recent one: a big family trip to Disneyland, my baby cousins' first trip.

I'm pretty clean! (They did flag a post I made about Alan Cumming, though.  ;))

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: A Difficult Designer

I agree with everyone's suggestions. Could you also build in more runthroughs before tech, perhaps on days where you've already scheduled most of the cast? Check with the designers (and specifically the LD) to see when would work for them. I'm sure the actors would appreciate multiple runthroughs before tech as well.

Tools of the Trade / Re: Call Script Word Processor Mac App

1. What are your general preferences are when creating a call script?
Easy to read. Easy to move cues around. I would love a way to create tabs for scenes to get to them easily in the digital version.

2. Do you keep your book on the left side or right side?
Right. (But I'm a lefty, so my book is always the reverse of most peoples'.  ;))

3. Do you like the cues on the left or right side of the text?
Left.

4. How do you notate your page numbers?
Bottom center, so they don't interfere with cues or blocking.

5. What shapes you like to use (any images are welcome)?
Arrows, rectangles. That's pretty much it. Every once in a while, circles, or freehand drawings.

The Green Room / Side Gigs
« on: Jan 22, 2013, 10:54 pm »
So not only did I finish my first day of tech today, I also found out I booked my first hand-and-foot-modelling gig. Yes, really. An actress I worked with suggested I submit to a friend of hers' agent, since I wear a size 5 and have high arches (apparently ideal for shoe/foot modelling). And I booked a gig! I'll be working with an artist in NZ, sending her photos of my hands and feet for an art class, and paid per batch of photos. Especially great, since I can do it fairly quickly in my off hours. Anyway, nice new weird side gig.

I have also been an undercover shopper! I've once or twice been paid to get a massage. Perfect. :)

So, what are your side gigs, if any? How else do you make money, using your SM skills or not?

First one has been removed (perhaps already filled?)

A bellhop bell, after doing a show with LOADS of text-message and email-alert sounds.

Also, scratch-and-sniff stickers, because who doesn't love scratch and sniff stickers? (You're the only actor who didn't get line notes today? GRAPE JOB!)
