MacGyver could have made a generator out of coconuts, but he would have needed duct tape, which was voted out in Round 2.

For timings, I write the time stamp on the top right corner of the page of the script once we hit full runs during tech week. This gives me a sense of how the show is going. The catch is always starting my stopwatch at the same point at each performance.

You might also see if the humidity level at your playing space is too low. We just started running humidifiers here at home because I started zapping light switches when I entered and left a room.

No "no" response? Worried about fragmentation.

Is the director a student, or a teacher? Who is overseeing the production? Since you're in school, and assuming this is possibly for a class credit, it would be appropriate to ask your teacher for assistance. After all, you're still learning. Good luck.

The Green Room / Re: Reviews

I don't think I've ver mentioned the stage manager by name in one of my reviews. A few of my writers have though, usually along the context of "Scene changes were coordinated by so and so." or in acknowledgement of a complex cue sequence.

Maybe the Dollar Store would have some porcelain figures that you could paint white as a base, then add doll's clothing (or even paint the clothing and other detail).

Actually, the interviewer's question may be "Who was Tony, and why did you get his award?"

I like the contract advice. Several years ago I was supposed to stage manage a summer pseudo-professional show. It ended up getting canceled the week before rehearsals were to start. All the time I (and others) spent in pre-production meetings and auditions ended up being as a donation to nothing. Sigh. If I ever get paid to SM again, there will be a contract.

A GoodShows type site would be tough. I'm also a theatre reviewer, and have seen the same show done many times by different groups. Several times after the first viewing I've thought "I never want to see that again." Then it turns out I have to see it again some point later at a different company, and it is wonderful. And the reverse has happened, loved a show the first time, seeing it later, hated it.

If people think something like this would actually be useful, it would be somewhat trivial to get something up and running. Either a forum system, or a wiki. I'm willing to start a sub-site under my theatre review site.

And of course, legal advice online is worth what you paid for it. Definitely talk with a lawyer in your state. I'd guess you'd be better off leaving bad enough alone, rather than becoming fodder for theatre jokes over the next couple years as your case works its way through the courts.

Cool, I learned something about NY theatre from Smash! I didn't know about the prevalence of back stage calling there.

But note that it is the director who tells the actors "Places!" And the stage manager calls the show from backstage.

Employment / Re: Payment in advance?

Who is the contract with, the theater group or the director personally? Maybe ask for half up front, half at opening night? Although most community theater groups don't have money until opening night, so that may not be an option. Is the stipend a make or break deal? If you don't get paid, will that cause a hardship in your life? Will working the show bring you other, less tangible, benefits? Good luck!
