The Green Room / Re: Olympic-sized technical difficulties

I loved how the closing ceremony opened with a clown "fixing" and raising the missing fourth column and then having the athlete who had been scheduled to light that column at the opening finally get her chance to bring the flame back for the night. Wonderful sense of humor, eh!

Wow. I've heard of bomb threats, but this God-will-not-be-mocked...  Wow!

In college (a small town in Kentucky) Agnes of God sparked a lot of controversy around the live birth on stage. The administration at this school also forbade us from having nudity in Equus.

Or use a pencil rather than chalk. Your tape will adhere better and the graphite should come up when you pull the tape.

Todd,

Don't worry too much. If you had the skills ten years ago, then they may be rusty but they're probably still there. Read the archived posts on the boards you'll see that although the technology may have been updated, stage management is still about organization, communication and people skills (just like when you did it last!).

Make sure you have a great assistant and welcome back!

College and Graduate Studies / Re: MFA at same school as BA?

Mercedes,

I am always a fan of diversity of experience and education. Unless there are significantly more professional opportunities in Detroit that will now be open to you at the Masters level, I'd recommend looking elsewhere. I'm know there are many other factors involved in your decision, but those are my two cents.

Congratulations on the offer from WSU and best of luck.

I keep saying I'm going to go to the FunTrivia site and just spend several days playing theatre and UK quizzes! I almost always tank on them.

The Green Room / Olympic-sized technical difficulties
« on: Feb 13, 2010, 05:32 pm »
Like millions of others, I enjoyed the opening ceremony for the 2010 Winter Olympics last night. My stomach twisted in sympathy during the glitch with the lighting of the flame (one of four giant "ice" beams which carried the flame from the deck to a central cauldron did not rise out of the floor).

Large scale pieces can result in large scale problems. What is the largest set piece/element that you've had malfunction during a performance?

NOW why are you late?
And I called to remind you.
You kill me - slowly.

Your pay is obscene.
Your contempt is obvious.
Just learn the damn show.

Please stay in your light.
It was focused just for you.
Are you a cockroach?

Check out the opera agreements on the AGMA website for some ideas of pay range. Only compare your offer with the listed pay for an equivalent size company.

I always traveled with a scented votive candle. Even the worst hotel room is just a little better if it smells like home.

Mine seemed to be mostly UK/Commonwealth based. I have miserable luck with those (I need to play other games on the FUN TRIVIA site!).

The Green Room / Fearless at DIY
« on: Dec 09, 2009, 05:13 pm »
Is it just me? I've noticed that because I built sets and am comfortable in a scene shop that I don't hesitate to do remodeling work at home or at other peoples homes. The basics of building translate to so many other projects. I don't mess with household electricity too much because of insurance, but I've re-wired tons of lamps at home. I also try to steer clear of (major) plumbing things.

Anyone else?  What's the biggest DIY project you've undertaken (successful or otherwise)?

You may need to simply memorize this section of the number. Invent lyrics to read to yourself to fill in the sections between the calls to insure that you are always exactly in sync.

Also, please be very careful about adding additional audio feeds into an already loud situation, especially in-ear types. You may even want to add earplugs during the drumline section to protect yourself. (Gosh, I sound like my mother!)
