It is the right thing for some people and the wrong thing for some.  It was the right thing for me- I go to Rutgers, Mason Gross School of the Arts.

But- I would suggest getting some experience working before returning to grad school.  Take a couple of years and during that time you can decide if grad school is the thing for you or not.  You will know if it is the right thing by whether you think you have the skills to do your job well and whether you have the connections to allow your career to proceed in the way that you want it to.

Employment / Work Light Productions
« on: Mar 11, 2009, 10:15 pm »
Hello all-

Does anyone have any experience with Work Light Productions?

They were also known as IntraMusic Theatricals.

I'm interviewing for a tour of A Year with Frog and Toad on Friday but I can't find out a lot of information about them.

Feel free to PM me if you don't want to post on the board.

thanks!

We all have things we are new at- I am encountering a lot of things I haven't done before in my first year of grad school.

I would echo that you should talk to the TD and your production manager to determine what your responsibilities are.  Even if you had done many strikes already at a different theatre I would suggest doing this because every theatre has its own way of doing things.

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: ASM/PA duties
« on: May 28, 2008, 01:15 am »
In a situation with 2 ASMs/PAs I have usually seen it split so that one person is concentrating on props and props tracking and the other person is concentrating on costumes and their tracking.

Things I have done during rehearsals
-paperwork, be on book, run lines in another room, set costumes and props during runs, run errands

Employment / Re: Dear Abby: Negotiating contracts
« on: May 23, 2008, 12:48 pm »
I just had to negotiate for a job.  I really wanted the job but had to leave 2 weeks early (after the show had opened) and I managed to get what I needed by providing a solution to the problem instead of just a problem.

I guess what I'm saying is politely suggest a counter offer and see what they say? Say you need a bit more money and some help with travel. I think as long as you aren't rude you should be able to ask for what you need.

The worst that can happen is they say no.

Employment / Re: AEA...to be or not to be?
« on: May 16, 2008, 06:18 pm »
The question is whether you think you will be able to get your next job as an AEA ASM or SM.  If you feel confident in that ability then absolutely take your card.  I know that I do not yet quite have the skills for that so I wouldn't take my card right now.

I agree with noting problems in the reports- in as neutral a manner as possible, just reporting the facts.

idea from a professor of mine: you can focus on watching a different element of the show each time- while still paying attention so you can call your cues.

one night pay attention to the lights, another sound, costumes... etc

The Hardline / Re: AEA Apprenticing??

Joining AEA.  You can join in one of three ways:

1) work in equity theatres as a AEA candidate and accrue 50 weeks of work, pay your money

2) have a theatre hire you on under an equity contract, pay your money

3) be a member of a sister union, pay your money

yes, yes, yes, it is possible.

I have a sociology degree and only happened into theatre.  I have worked in theatre 6 years since graduating undergrad, the majority of which was not even in stage management.

I would say call up the programs you are interested in.  Send them your resume.  Chat.  See if you think you'd be a good fit.  Definitely apply.  As Emily says, they might not take you immediately but you should try.

I'm also at Rutgers.  Very few people I know here have undergrad degrees in theatre.

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: Cast Gifts/Thank Yous?
« on: Apr 08, 2008, 09:41 pm »
I think as long as the cast/crew/everyone knows that you are grateful for their help in opening a show that is good.  If that means a note on the callboard and a couple of bags of candy that's good.  If you have the time and give everyone a note then that's fine too.
