Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / SHOWS: The Pillowman
« on: Oct 13, 2007, 01:32 pm »
Hi, all!  We just opened The Pillowman at CATCO and I am thoroughly enjoying calling this show every night.  It's one of the most fun plays I've done.   I'm wondering if anyone else out there has done this show and how did you deal with the unique design and SFX elements (blood and violence, etc.)?    Also, what has your audience response been?   Have a lot of walk-outs or are folks loving it?

Thank you, Justin!   This is definitely helpful.

This thread is terrific!  Thank you, Matthew, for kicking it off.

I'd like to pick up on something Justin said about acting and directing credits.   I found in my SPT environment that I was expected to have a lot more acting and directing knowledge and vocabularly than I ever imagined.   I'm not sure if the heavy emphasis on acting maintenance is a company-specific thing or is found widely in companies that produce plays.  Is this an issue in the larger shows/musicals?   If so, *should* we put acting and directing training and experience on the resume?   Or, is it a given that one learned that stuff in undergrad, and perhaps discuss it at the interview level?  What do the people on the receiving side of the resume think?

The Hardline / Re: Las Vegas and unions
« on: Oct 10, 2007, 08:12 pm »
Hi, Chops!  Thanks for replying to my post.    I'm wondering if there's a large union presence (AEA & IATSE) out there, or if union work is only a small percentage of the work being done.  Dani mentioned that Nevada is a right-to-work state, so how much does union status matter?   If one were interested in working on an Equity contract, is it difficult to get on a show?   My assumption is that there's little turnover on union gigs (both AEA and IATSE).  Is my assumption correct?

Howdy!  I have decided to move to Vegas and I'm curious about union contracts out there (Equity and IATSE).   What's your experience been?  Are all the casinos unionized?   Any info & stories you can share are extremely appreciated!

If there's already a topic built on this question, please let me know.  Thanks!

Tools of the Trade / Re: IM Programs in Rehearsal
« on: Aug 03, 2007, 04:40 pm »
My theatre doesn't have wireless or other internet access in the rehearsal room or theatre, so we don't utilize IM.  We're heavy Outlook users in the office.  I would absolutely love, love, love to be able to IM questions to my boss or other co-workers during rehearsal.  If I had the choice, I would use Google Talk.

I've been kind of late to arrive on the text messaging scene.  Since I've got the cheapest phone service possible, I don't text very often at all since it costs me extra money.   However, my ASM, being younger and much more cell phone savvy than me, texts all the time.   It has never been a problem in rehearsal, I am glad to say.   And, there have been occasions when I was across the building from her, needed to get a message to her in a way that didn't distract from the rehearsals we were both in, and text messaging was the perfect solution.   I'm all for it.

I've never seen that Etiquette document, either, but I like it.   It sounds like it was written by a Stage Manager.   I'll definitely be posting that on the board when my rehearsals start.    I noticed "page 5" and "page 6" at the top.  I wonder what larger document this was part of?   Did a quick search on actorsequity.org, but didn't come up with anything.    (I didn't look that hard for it, though.  Will go back later.)

I agree with Erin, above, re: 30, 15, 5 minute calls, although I have used the two-minute on shows that needed it.

Here's a new question for you all:   is it better to use the god mic to make your calls, or do them in person?    I understand a personal call would be nearly impossible for a large theatre/cast, but for those of us in mid-size to small, is there a professional standard?

My two cents, echoing what's already been mentioned:  if it's meant to be, it can wait until after the show has closed to be explored.   I do know of two people who got together early on in a rehearsal process, and it worked out just fine because they never brought their relationship into the rehearsal room or to performances.  It stayed personal, and if you're going to do it, my advice would be to be careful to just keep it outside of work.   As for already established relationships, I totally agree with BalletPSM:  it's been fantastic to work with my guy because I trust him completely and know exactly how he works.    Can't say quite the same for working with an ex, though.  :D
