College and Graduate Studies / Re: college feedback

I almost applied to Adelphi but I didn't want to stay that close to home. I went to SUNY Purchase and got not only a conservatory but a cheaper school! Check it out. 35min to NYC. All working professionals. BFA. And I have heard mixed things about Hofstra but nothings been that bad. The only SM I knew from there was a huge jerk and not very good at what he did but that does NOT speak for their program, he was just probably born that way. The good things I heard about hofstra were GREAT and the bad things weren't that bad except that the campus isn't safe.

I can explain more about all Hofstra and SUNY Purchase if you PM me.

I'm not AEA (yet..) so I don't know any inside info but I know I saw a flyer that was about the AEA supporting them.

Since Production Management and all departments are present, it really would be a waste of time.

Matthew, I respectfully disagree here.  In several other threads recently the aspect of record-keeping has come up.  If 10 years later a dancer makes a false injury claim for an injury that allegedly occurred during a tech rehearsal and there is no report to document that the rehearsal even took place - could turn into a sticky situation.  Things like this are rare, but if you don't document every rehearsal and performance you're setting yourself up for trouble.

edit: added "that allegedly"

I agree completely but I also think it's useful to just list the notes with the a nice "As discussed today..." just to have it all there and to make sure they got all the notes. Sometimes things get missed or you just don't realize that someone else's note will affect someone else.

College is an experience I think everyone should have. Even if you do decide to start working... you should keep up with your education. I am graduating with a BFA in Stage Management and honestly... I learned so much about my profession and myself. I grew so much in 4 years and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: Tech or Church?

This was something that recently came up with a jewish designer at my school. If your priority is your religion then good for you... but then don't do a show that will get in the way.

I have a rehearsal report form open in Word on my computer.  When I need to make notes I do.  Then all I ahve to do is read it over, update any changes and add anything I missed and send by email. - Luckily there's a button that sends the document to Entourage and all I have to do is address it.

I love MACs

A button to send right to Entourage?!?! Oh! oh!!! Tell me how to do it!

Employment / Name Dropping?
« on: Oct 10, 2007, 06:10 pm »
What is a good way to name drop in a cover letters? One of my professors has worked at many of the theatres I am applying to and we have been trying to find a way to put her name in the cover letter? I am having trouble finding a tasteful way to do it. Any ideas??

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: ASM Books?
« on: Oct 10, 2007, 12:27 pm »
in my opinion, knowing how to PSM is knowing out to ASM. I found it easier to assist when I knew exactly what a PSM does because you're basically just helping them do their job. Thats just my opinion / experience.

College and Graduate Studies / Re: Did/Do you attend Rutgers?
« on: Oct 10, 2007, 12:24 pm »
Does Purchase offer an MFA? I'm specifically looking for that sort of course load, something as much based in liberal arts academics as production.

They do but not in Stage Management. Based on your last post, Purchase probably wouldn't be for you. The production is more important for the SMs are purchase than the classes. Check out Yale for a great MFA SM program.

Check out SUNY Purchase. Its outside of Manhatten but only a 30min train ride and all of our staff are NYC working broadway professionals.

Also! My director at Purchase currently works at Rutgers and he loves the SMs hes had there.
