Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: Inner Crew Issues
« on: Sep 08, 2007, 12:31 am »
Is the director an adult? Or no? Has s/he expressed an opinion on the girl's wish to SM? Has she even asked about it?

I'm a senior year HS SM too. If I had your problem, and couldn't talk to the director, or another adult in charge, I would tell her that if she has a wish to SM, talk to the director herself. If s/he says no, or she won't do that, then don't show up until you can be quiet and do the job you've been given. Except more politely of course...If she tries arguing point out that you both have the same goal: a smooth, successful production and what she's doing isn't helping too much, so maybe she has her priorities a bit mixed up.

The crew at my high school comes out for curtain call at the very end and the cast also gestures to the booth.

For a high school production I think it's appropriate, but I haven't seen it done at all high school shows I've seen and I've never seen it done at any professional shows I've been to.

College and Graduate Studies / SM Colleges
« on: Jun 27, 2007, 01:21 pm »
I'm starting my senior year in the fall and I have to start visiting colleges. I have two questions, one any suggestions for SM colleges, BA or BFA, in the Northeast? I live in NY and really want to stay in the (relative) area. Two, when I visit colleges, are there any particular things I should look out for in their theatre program?

I'm really looking for any suggestions you can throw my way, thanks!

Thanks so much for the advice...I have a meeting in the morning to discuss exactly what is happening, and now I know what questions to ask! I don't think it should go too badly, as long as it doesn't rain like it's supposed to.

Thanks again!

My priorities definitely shift come tech/hell week. Homework goes on hold, classes become optional, and anyone who needs to see me (including all my teachers) knows that I am most likely running back and forth between the theater and my director's room (and sometimes the counseling center if I'm really stressed out!).

It's really amazing how understanding some of my teachers can be come showtime. I get extensions on homework, they don't mind if I skip class to do last minute set/tech stuff. It's nice. Then again, it could be because they are afraid of facing the wrath of my director (who becomes a fire breathing monster from hell right before the show) if I can't do work for her because I have to, gasp, go to class.

That being said, even with classes everyday from 7-2 and then rehearsal 3-1(ish), plus work and such for two weeks...I sorta like the high intensity stress. Maybe I'm a masicist?

Stage Management: Other / Advice for stage managing a concert?
« on: May 28, 2007, 04:06 pm »
Help!

I've agreed to stage manage an outdoor concert at a human rights rally run by a friend next weekend, and I really don't know what to expect. I'm new to stage managing in general, and the few shows I've done so far have been plays and musicals. My friend hasn't had time yet to fill me in on what she needs from me, despite my best efforts to set up meetings with her. Since it's less than a week away, I'm getting a bit nervous. Can anyone give me any advice on the matter? What would normally be expected from a stage manager at a concert? Any tips, suggestions, etc?

Thank you!
Jennifer
