I have a good friend who is the other SM at my university(we each work for a different director in the same department) and she recently was working on Blythe Spirit and had an actress who refused to have olives in her martini. Finally, my friend just put them on a toothpick for her so that the actress could offer them to her husband, who also dislikes olives, but was a trooper about it. All this was of course approved by the director and it just goes to show that putting thought into something, even for the pickiest of actors, goes a long way.

My boyfriend is an LD and just got his cards done by Vistaprint and they look really nice. And they were the free ones.

I'm in the same predicament. I was going to make a post about it today actually... hopefully someone knows!  :-[

Today is Sax Day, sorta makes me wanna listen to some big band swing music.. 8)

This makes me feel better. Though it's my second show, my first show was not nearly as tech heavy as this one. (Try 30 LQs (126pg play) to 150(46 pg play). But these thoughts on how to relax are really helpful. I'm glad I'm not the only one suffering from tech week insomnia.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: Rehearsal Suggestions

In response to # 4: It might help if you had an open dork box beside you in case an actor needs something/or you need something later.

Dare I ask what a "dork box" is?  .....

A dork box is your SM kit or as I like to call it, my "momma box". One of my favorite things about SMing is when someone asks you for something quite obscure and you can produce it in front of their eyes instantly.

So, after reading this thread, I went through and changed my book to what fit it, and I must say, it's so much easier! Everyone keeps pickin on me for being so organized. I think they forget that THAT is why I am a good SM. I know where everything is and I am always prepared. Yay that.  ;D

The choreographer I worked with before college used to type up her choreography for me and the cast and it made things MUCH easier. All I had to do was ask.  :)

I also am under the impression that SMs don't handle the casting. Also, doesn't the director have some sort of say of who is in his cast? I don't know, something about that doesn't sit right with me, but I'm not sure if it falls out of your "job description." I will ask my director tomorrow(who is also a great friend of mine) and see what he has to say.

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: Handing over a show

Because all stage managers are destined to be hit by a bus.

I was once.

I was in a car, but a bus struck us.

Thank goodness my prompt book was in order.

If you have not been hit by a bus yet; be prepared - it will happen to you.

It always does.

It's the curse of being a stage manager.

I'm waiting for my turn! :( You know, when I tried explaining about my prompt book and WHY it was so organized, one of the actors from another show laughed. Ironically enough, her SM got sick. And her ASM couldn't understand her prompt book. So there.

My biggest thing is keeping a close eye on my actors at all times. Always be ready to write things down, answer questions, and be prepared. Grease is a great show, have fun with it!

For me, it sorta just fell into my lap. I was in my first semester of college and I had to take an "arts" course(I started school as a mass comm/journalism major) and so I decided to take intro to theatre(basically theatre history) and I got landed with a new professor. Well, new to the school. And I was very active and interested in the class because I did theatre in high school and I thought this was gonna be the closest I got to it ever again. Well, one day before class he approached me and said, "I need a stage manager and an asm for a show that I am directing in the spring, are you interested?" I explained to him that I'd never done backstage stuff before, but I'd love to learn. He told me he'd train me along the way since I was new and that he'd love to have someone with my passion for theatre. I ended up stage managing Waiting For Godot that spring. And it was amazing. The TD apparently has had good things to say about me and my stage managing, which makes me feel good. I'm now stage managing for this director til I graduate, which is awesome!

This whole site is new to me, but I know that my professor/director of my current show, is forever picking on me because it's become the first thing I check when I get near a computer. I've gotten some great ideas from this site that have already helped our show!
