Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: theatre romance

Part of the problem is that rehearsals are pretty much the only place most of us CAN meet people, since it eats up our free time.

Steal office supplies.

Give them plenty of notice, in writing, but deliver it by hand and explain, and thank them for the 7 years.

They will probably be happy for you.....

College and Graduate Studies / Re: Wayne State University???

I was considering going to Wayne State a few years back.  I spoke with the lady who ran the SM area at the time and it sounded like a great program.  All you do is theatre.  And they pay you.

The SMs all meet in the morning and vent.  And they ASM each other's shows too.  I think they are rehearsing one while performing another.  They do all classical plays.

I've found that in Shakespeare all of the cues revolve around scene transitions - actors entrering and exiting - and the light cues and sound cues that accompany it.  in that case, for timing purposes, a Q2Q with actors is invaluable.

What we need / I want to do in Tech largely depends on the needs of the show.  if it is a musical with lots of scene changes, wagons, fly cues, and so on, we'll do a dry tech w/o actors until we get it down, then if we NEED it , go Q2Q with actrons.  my preference is to just RUN the show, no matter what the show, because it is better practice for me and the actors ... but it is not always the best solution

I understand that an infinite number of monkeys, given an infinite number of headsets and an infinitely long technical rehearsal, will eventually call all the cues for all the works of Shakespeare.

LOL LOL LOL

I'm not sure I understand why the Director cares at all how the blocking is written down so long as it is written down and can easily be read back to the director or actor.

Tools of the Trade / Re: Do you prefer Word or Excel?
« on: Apr 13, 2007, 03:11 pm »
I think I've said this before, but the reason I use word has nothing to do with my preferences and everything to do with the personnel at the theater. Most of the time, when I am out in a regional space, I am luck if they have dial-up, let alone excel, and a percentage of the office isn't extremely computer facile. My primary consideration is that most of the departments and the house can open Word when they can't open much else

this is me too

i keep checklists and such that only I use on my laptop in Excel, but otherwise everything is in Word because more people can use it more easily

Just call everyone "Boo."

I used audition photos to keep kids straight for a children's musical.  cheat sheet for the first week.

i just spread them out on my tech table

I don't know anything about their theatre program.

HOWEVER.

When I was in high school I took a film class.  We toured on a field trip the NCSA film department.  The tour was given by the Asst Dean.  One of our students was mouthy and the Asst Dean and he got into a physical altercation, and the mouthy student was pinned up against a wall with his air cut off.

I didn't like the mouthy student, so I thought this was great.  The film dept's attitude was to treat students like they are already working, so they are very hard on them, cut them no slack, and tolerate no grief.

The police were called.  I don't know if charges were pressed.
