Tools of the Trade / Re: What is Gaffer Tape?
« on: Mar 01, 2007, 11:02 pm »
Is no one going to mention the courtesy tab? Anyone?

Ok. The courtesy tab is the fold over at the end of a tape run and/or roll that allows the next person who pulls it off/up to do so without getting the adhesive on your fingers or the tape all twisted up. It's one of those professional golden rules. Like anything, you just have to know when and how to use it.

Does anyone have an example of a run sheet they can post?

I agree with Mac Calder. New looking black shirts and jeans works fine for me too. I make an effort to keep my clothes looking as new as possible. No faded tee shirts. A nice looking jacket will almost always pull it together. You car wear it for your entrance and take it off. It never bothered anyone to see that I was wearing just a tee underneath.
I never leave home without my leatherman. I'll often wear a hat or something that becomes my trademark item. To me, anyone who looks like they are ready to work gets a star. I don't know if anyone else will back me up on this.
disclosure: I went from a Lighting tech to a SM, so thats the way I was brought up. Also, I'm non-union because I still do lighting/sound/set construction on the side. There is a tiny difference in dress compared to union and non-union.

SMNetwork Archives / Re: Attendance Software

Its cool that you are continuing to develop the program. It makes me feel better about buying a copy. I hate nothing more than a post about a program, then they close up shop and run. Keep working on it. There is an untapped market.

Looking back, I did what I thought was enough to pull the show off. I didn't do as many forms as I do now (I don't like forms that much, but when devote time to think about the people you are giving them to- people appreciate that). When I say forms I guess what I really want to get at is  detailed Running sheets, props,  costume stuff; the things you can get away with in college when you know that your frat brother Tommy's got your back because you put him in charge of a crew. I didn't cover my own ass. I remember saying one or two comments that gave my opinion when it wasn't required. That would get me fired.

It's funny how a post can make you look back and see how far you've gone and how much you still have to go. Congrats to the first timers! Have fun by working hard. Best of luck. I look forward to seeing your names in Playbill.

A place to enter the call time and a time of arrival when people show up late.  A printable sign in sheet for actors would be cool. I'm sure your already working on these things anyway. My dream for any program would be Google Cal integration. I would develop my own software, but as you know it takes a lot of energy - and it almost always has to be written by someone who doesn't work as a SM, there is never any brain power to devote to anything other than the show.

Tools of the Trade / Re: The comfort of a featherweight headset

I'm holding off on buying a headset because of the fact that the muffs almost always force your glasses into your head. Then your glasses get out of shape. Grrrr

If anyone knows of any models that are great but do not have that annoying bleep everytime someone talks or presses the button, could you please post?

Often I don't feel like dragging everything around with me, but i just can't help but take everything with me. It's nice to know that people operate without having to haul around everything. I think I will try to downsize what I carry, the flip side is people will depend on me less to provide all the things they say they need but can pick up after rehearsal.

Tools of the Trade / Kit Container
« on: Jan 18, 2006, 03:25 pm »
1. What sort of container do you use (roadcase, luggage, etc) for your kit?

2. Do you travel with your kit or do you assemble a kit at your destination?

What do you like or dislike about the one you have? Do you have a dream case? What tips do you have to offer for someone looking to replace a tired old suitcase or building a kit for the first time?

SMNetwork Archives / MIT SM Manual gone?
« on: Oct 05, 2005, 12:46 am »
I haven't been able to dig up any copies of Teresa Hernandez's famous MIT manual. It is neither available from MIT, nor is it cached in google. If anyone has a copy could you please post a link?

*this is my first post, and I must say the people here are very knowledgeable, polite, and very understanding to those new to the field. Its nice to know that people are aware that one learns more when members don't spend all their time beating up each other.
