Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: HELP!

It just occurred to me that you should probably check what your responsiblities, if any, are to FOH. Do you have to get clearance from the FOH manager to start/restart after interval or is that your call. Also check on any emergency procedures that may be in place and where you fit in to them as stage manager (if they have any!)

Do let us know how it went!

yep, contact numbers are good. And check with whoever set it up what info the bands have been given about soundcheck times and changeover times. These events get behind when musos are not wrangled well and changeovers take forever. Maybe see if they can itentify the main contact person in each group for you. You sound like you've got the general idea. Just dont be shy about presenting yourself as the person who is in charge - even if you dont really know what you are doing, if you sound like you do people will fall into line. I dont mean boss people about for the sake of it - if you dont know what needs to happen ask people, but make sure everyone understands you run the schedule and that its not negotiable. Dont fall for the we just need 10 more minutes line - if you can give them the 10 minutes do so, but tell them after 5 that theve got five minutes left and then ask them to wrap up right on 10 in a big loud voice...
chookas!

What kind of event is it? Multiple bands? A drama? ...it would help to have a few more details. But basically get a list of what is supposed to happen and when it is supposed to happen and who is suppose to make which bits happen. Make a list of all the things you or anyone else will need to make it happen and organise to have them there. Put up schedules everywhere you can for people to track the event backstage. Then on the day do whatever it takes to keep everyone to the schedule. Keep saying loudly "there is 1/2 an hour/5 minutes (or whatever) until I need ...the soundcheck to start/finish/all cast and crew offstage/until the changeover"...that's pretty much it!

and  what does the director think the stage manager is going to do if an actor calls for a line once the show is open? It has happened to me three times in 10 years and you can only respond - the sooner the better. On one occasion the actor called for line, got the line and started again so smoothly and matter of factly that even I hardly remembered that it happened by the time I was filling in the show report! Imagine if I had decided to not give the line and let him figure it out...

SMNetwork Archives / Send me your puppet! (exp. April '08)
« on: Apr 21, 2007, 05:24 am »
Hello!

I have a new job (I've been in it a week and I am starting to get used to the fact that there are puppets hanging over my desk - but it's kind of odd!) and one part of it is to run the global 'million puppet project'. Anytime from now until April 6th 2008, anyone, anywhere in the world, can send a puppet they've made (any sort, any size, any standard) to us here in Perth, Western Australia. It will then form part of our World Record attempt to hold the largest assembly of puppets in one place at one time. It's all part of the UNIMA (international puppetry body) 20th World Congress and International Puppetry Festival -also being held in Perth in 2008.

So if you are looking for a creative outlet to relax after work or to pass the time between jobs, why not whip up a puppet and ship him/her/it off to Oz for its first big adventure into the world...

Yours hopefully

what style of performance are you doing?
The assistant director in opera may well notate all the blocking, but i wouldnt expect it in any other artform.

i'm happy to be interviewed but be aware that i'm in australia and our standard practice (though not I suspect philosophic approach) may vary from the standard in the US. PM/email me if you want to follow up.

"I don't like office supplies, I think they're pretty useless and a waste of money."

this made my laugh tonight! Thinking of the thread almost entirely about sharpies....

Try a Sears hardware section - the company specialises in hardware! How do I - an Australian- know this?  A few years ago I did a gig which involved 4 men living in the windows of the Sears  new flagship store on State St in Chicago. Before we even left home to do the gig the company sent EVERY ONE of us a red metal toolbox FULL OF TOOLS - by AIRMAIL - to our home addresses in Australia (it cost about $150 australian in stamps per box!). And they are great!
here ends the sears commercial.
cheers

calling a show in the round can be a lot of fun. You get to see the audience watching the show which is quite fascinating! Hope it goes well.

I've probably operated more sound than I have called -when calling I use numbers. But If I am operating I notate just using A or B (assuming 2 basic sound sources) and then a track number  - so A2 or B3. Then I put an arrow up or down next to the number and a level number next to the arrow.
