Employment / Resumes - jobs in a few months
« on: Mar 19, 2013, 12:28 pm »
Hi all,

I'm applying for a job starting in August this year, but do you think I should include work that will happen between now and (assuming I get it) when I start the job?

If so, should I list that in a separate 'Upcoming Projects' section, or just list them as though they are completed?

Interested to get a couple of opinions on this....

A bobble- like a BRITA filter in a bottle! Nice and big, and there are two main positives over just buying bottles at the supermarket- I don't lose it, because it's enough money that I care about it; and it doesn't get all soft and crinkly after a few refills!

I don't really make tea or coffee- I grab one when I'm buying breakfast, but that's about it.

Going back to Dropbox, if you agree to use it's Camera Upload feature, then delete the photos, you are awarded up to 3GB extra space. Through things like this, the Space Race and referrels, I nw have a 13GB Dropbox for free!

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: SCENERY: Sand Onstage
« on: Feb 26, 2013, 09:53 pm »
On the note of weight, a playing space of 8m*8m, with a roughly average depth of 8-10cm, used nearly 3.5 tonnes of dry sand! We were in the theatre for three weeks, and on the out, we found that the sand had removed all the varnish from the parquet floor in the auditorium. We were performing in the round, and the transfer simply from the cast and through airborne particles took the whole lot up.

On the subject of dust, PSMKay's suggestion sounds good. We just sprayed water from spray bottles before the cast were called, and again just before house opened.

The entire space was swept two or three times a day, carpet mats were placed at entrances (hoovered twice a day), and the sand was raked before the cast were called, and again at the half.

We also didn't find it necessary to put anything under the sand. The stage floor was painted, and the sand spread out on top.

The final suggestion I have it to ask the company (at all times, except dresses and performances) to bring in a second pair of shoes, and only use their costumes on the sand. Even with the regular raking and cleaning, I was regularly picking little stones and other bits from 'outside'.....

Any other questions, just ask!

HTH,

Changing track here for a quick question about iAnnotate...

So, I've got everything working, all good. My only issue is making the notes I add stand out enough. I can't highlight notes I make, or parts of the score (each page is scanned in as one image) - what I'm looking for is a way to add a background to any notes I add in.

Any thoughts?

You say BTEC...is it possible that there is another lovely Brit on here to swell our vastly overpowered ranks?!

I'd go for the Des Moines job. The main reason for this is that you already have contacts and people to ask for future work at CATF - this is a chance to spread your network even further.

On a selfish note, I personally MUCH prefer opera to theatre, which may have tainted my views slightly. I also have no experience of the way things work in the US in general, and so others may very well disagree with me.

Sounds interesting - but I suppose, as with many things, it will only become useful after quite a few people have added their thoughts. Can we expand it to the UK/other countries? Happy to add my thoughts.

NEW NOTE:
Peter Kilman-Strauss ("Bottom") is demanding that his 12-year-old daughter, Maribel Stacey Hunter Amber Bambi Maryland Reagan Olivier Kilman-Strauss-Wagner-Gruber, be cast as a sprite or he'll walk.

MSHABMROKSWG is allergic to nylon, cotton, sawdust, feathers, body paint, lycra, burlap, sunlight and the colour green.

What do we do?

Re-cast Bottom.

NEW NOTE:
The director has asked for an exploding 8' wide chandelier onstage, and he would like to hear the 'tinkle' as the crystal hits the floor. After previous bad experiences, he will not accept any sound effects.

Tools of the Trade / Re: Call Script Word Processor Mac App

Hmmmm.....to be honest, I'm not hugely knowledgeable about the PSM role in the US, other than it seems to be both the SM and DSM combined (or, conversely, the SM and DSM is the PSM role split in two - however you want to look at it!)

The only thing that is popping into my head that is different is that we don't use Warnings in addition to Standbys when calling.

One other thing that's occured to me - the ability to add timings in the margin would be useful (mine are usually on the spine edge of the cues section, in a small circle - but I guess that's a personal preference.)

I'm a little confused by some of your questions. It may just be a US/UK thing, so apologies if my replies don't make a huge amount of sense!

1. What are your general preferences are when creating a call script?
Scene tabs on the right edge of the page, 5 minute tabs along the bottom. EVERYTHING on Post-its until after opening night. Easily mark-able and change-able cuts and re-workings. Ability to import scores or scripts from Sibelius, PDF or Word, with a template added for the other side.

2. Do you keep your book on the left side or right side?
Left half of left page - blocking - top section (approx. 10%) as section for props movements
Right half of left page - cues/calls - half of tope 10% for current cues (i.e., what LXQ is current as I turn the page)
Spine
Right page - score/script, with either lines from cues on left page, or cues remarked above the correct note/beat/word

4. How do you notate your page numbers?
However they are on the score/script.....

5. What shapes you like to use (any images are welcome)?
Rectangles, arrows, clouds

Does that make sense to you guys?

I'm afraid not - only running until 15 April! However, I'm sure there will be something you'll enjoy when you get here! If you need a tour guide or have any questions though, just ask!

Oh my god! I would love to see a ballet version of Alice! I am a dancer as well and that would just be so amazing!

The Royal Ballet over here (UK) based their first new full-length work on Alice in Wonderland. If you happen to be coming over to London in the next couple of months, it's in rep again - otherwise, it was televised by the BBC, so may be available through certain online video websites.....
