all work and no play make homer something something...

Sorry...had to start with that. I run to reduce stress. I only started this within the past year, but it's very helpful.

Otherwise, laptop playback would be my suggestion (a Mac with qLab is my choice)

Qlab is a wonderful program that gives you a lot of versatility with projections.  It's only available on a mac if you decide to go this route, just a heads up.

Agreed. Save your energies for the show and not your time sheet.

Has it happened more than 3 times in your run? That's not enough evidence for me to place judgment when reviewing someone. And if it's a repeating occurrence, have faith in your SM to realize which one of you wants to be there more.

Since I currently run our shows off Qlab, I use the other half of my screen for my script.  I use the comments feature in Pages as my calling script.  Very simple and effective.

The one thing that truly changed how I work is the impact driver.

OMG I love the impact driver....

The Green Room / Re: thoughts on sharing
« on: Feb 06, 2011, 01:34 pm »
Great topic Matthew!

When I read this post, my mind immediately went to open source sharing.  I hate to quote wikipedia, but I think they explain it in words far better than I ever could:
Open source sharing enables "a self-enhancing diversity of production models, communication paths, and interactive communities....The open source model includes the concept of concurrent yet different agendas and differing approaches in production, in contrast with more centralized models of development...A main principle and practice of open source software development is peer production by bartering and collaboration, with the end-product, source-material, "blueprints", and documentation available at no cost to the public."  (from their article - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_source - on open source sharing)

I understand your friend's thought process though Matthew, and I'm sure individuals on this site have withheld information from others at some point in their career to get an edge.  It's survival.  Whatever gives you that extra boost that someone else might not have. However, sharing is for the common good, not necessarily the individual.  I could see myself focusing more on my own life and career rather than on the education of others.  It's not selfish by any means.  I think as I age though, I gain a fondness for education and teaching.  I definitely am not at a level I would feel comfortable molding the minds of others, but I would love to be like my college mentor one day.

I started reading this site in 2008, right at the time I started to hit my stride as a stage manager.  What this site has given me more than anything else is the mindset of a professional.  It allowed me to be fair and reasonable in my approach to difficult situations, in contrast to years prior where I might not have thought things out at stringently.

Something I have run into as far as Dewault users....they say they specifically bought the sets of tools because of the different options, specifically the radio/charger.  I'm not sure if Makita carries that product, but I know 2 techies who swear by it.

Dewault does tend to be more of a contrator-grade tool in my experiences.  I personally use a Ryobi but use Dewault pretty frequently.  I know Makita has lithium batteries which tend to last for a much longer time than the normal nickel-cadmium batteries.  Dewault does not have this option at this time as far as I know.  I have the lithium batteries for my Ryobi set and they keep the tool working at full power all day, unlike the nickel-cadmium batteries which cause the tool to slow as the power level fades....forget using a reciprocating or circular saw at 1/2 power.

The Green Room / Re: Funding Shortage
« on: Jan 22, 2011, 11:20 am »
In high school, our theatre program was an extracurricular activity only.  We had a faculty advisor and raised the money entirely on our own with little to no funding from the school.  We did all sorts of money-raising activities so we'd actually have a budget to work with, my favorite of which included ad-runs.  We'd get teams together after school and take different areas of our home town and ask local businesses if they'd like to place a certain sized ad in our program for a certain amount of money.  We'd open these up to parents, friends, teachers, and whoever else wanted to make a donation.

Don't give up pursuing what you love.  It may be hard sometimes, but trust me when I say when you have worked as hard as we did in high school, it makes it all the sweeter.

The Green Room / Re: Little luxuries...
« on: Jan 21, 2011, 03:01 pm »
I usually splurge on take out and coffee while taking a break from the gym for the length of tech...those little luxuries during tech always seem so unhealthy looking back at them, but they seem so necessary sometimes.  I wish they didn't!

My current cast is 5 people...so no sign in sheet for them.

My next cast is 22...absolutely.

The Green Room / Re: Tax Season!

I usually do my own with the help of my dad.  He's no accountant, but he's savvy enough to do them himself and has been for a while.  I figure in a few years when I'm less of a dependent, I'll hire an accountant.  But for now, just doing them on my own will do.

The Green Room / Re: First Jobs
« on: Jan 16, 2011, 12:25 am »
My first paid theatrical experience was as PSM for a summer stock production of Les Miserables between my junior and senior years of college.  I saw the job posting on a flyer on campus, cold called the producers and introduced myself.  I found out they were going to be at a job fair I was already planning on going to.  I met them there, handed over my resume, talked them up and got the job.  It was a 2 week rehearsal period, 1 week of tech and 2 wees of shows.  I got $425/week plus I was put up in a hotel for tech weekend (loved that little negotiation).
My funny little story for the run is that I had actors asking me my age because they couldn't tell.  Best guesses were 25, which really made me chuckle since I have a baby face and still to this day get IDed for scratch tickets every once in a while.
It was a great gig.  Worked with some great and friendly pro's, including some IATSE and AEA members.

First off, happy birthday SMNetwork! Thank you for everything PSMKay!

In January of 2000, I was starting the second half of 7th grade.  My first theatre experience was in 7th Grade when I acted in Cinderella as chorus boy #7.  The rest is history....
