The Green Room / Re: SMASH - the TV series

I wouldn't assume that TV people know what a theatrical stage manager is: or how anything works in the live world of theatre.

Given Theresa Rebeck's involvement - I think a basic understanding is there . . .

As well as the fact that the actress playing the stage manager, Ann Harada, would be able to offer plenty of observational input if they really wanted to go in a more realistic direction.  She's worked with more than her share of stage managers in her years in the theatre.

I'm confused.  I put in the answer for Chapter 1, and I'm sure it's correct.  How do I move on to Chapter 2, or will it send me some way to do so on its own?

ETA - Nevermind, I think I figured it out.

If I remember correctly, Wicked is the only musical currently running on Broadway where the SM is calling from the house and not from backstage.

Every opera I've ever worked on has been called from backstage.

I personally love being backstage to call the show.

I'm hoping to get home to visit the family in Cleveland for a week or so in the middle of June, before I start my next job in the city at the end of the month.  Then after that, around the end of August, probably a trip to Memphis to visit some friends there.

As I said to a set designer yesterday, now we know how cops, lawyers, and doctors must feel when watching things like NYPD Blue, any court room procedural, and Grey's Anatomy.  ;)

Large cast, typically a large, multi-location set, and two dogs (or more depending on how many understudy/alternate dogs there are).

On the good news side, the Bucks County Playhouse, which has been dark for about about a year and a half (and luckily did not "mysteriously" burn down, as several other theaters that had been under the control of the previous owner did), announced their new season for their reopening in July.  They are under new management, and, if I recall correctly, are hoping to once again begin operating under an Equity contract again sometime in the near future.

The facility is also undergoing a very much needed renovation.

and - if your director says it is his right, then he is following some form of rules.

Not necessarily. A lot of directors, especially ones who work in a lot of non-union settings, seem to get the idea that their word is law and nothing else matters. One of the last non-Eq jobs I did, years ago, the director worked primarily non-Eq with an occasional show with one of the small SPT theatres in the area and often complained about having to follow so many "pointless" rules about schedules and breaks when she worked there.

Pre-punched paper is the best ever.  It makes me sad when I go to buy a ream and Staples is out of it.

Employment / Re: Transitioning to TV/Film?

I've been to the Mayor's Office of Film to obtain permits a few times for one of the companies I work with regularly in the city.  They have a "Made in NY - PA (production assistant)" program you may want to look into.  I'm not sure how necessary it really is, or how it even works, but here's the link to the website.

I've been lucky that I've had pretty continual coverage since I moved to NYC in the spring of 08.  And at the end of this current contract I'll have the weeks to keep me covered until the end of 2013, so I have a little bit of breathing room.

I find it's hard to say that there is a hard and fast line, it kind of falls under the terms one judge used when asked to define pornography, "I can't define it, but I know it when I see it."

I feel lucky in that, having worked with some people who had a bit of a reputation for being difficult amongst their respective circles, that I have only had one instance where I felt that somebody crossed the line.  This was during a production of The Will Rogers Follies and we had an in-one scene change US of a black scrim while Will was doing his final radio monologue DS.  The crew, being the first time we were doing it in the dark during tech, were understandably a bit louder than would have been ideal.  The director went off on them about how this was a pivotal moment in the show and it could not be interrupted by such a disrespect for the scene.  I quickly called a hold and a break, as my crew in this situation consisted of high school kids and volunteers who did not need to be subjected to that.  The director quickly vanished and managed to keep out of my sight during the break, and I searched for her as I wanted to talk to her about it.  Luckily once I called everyone back she reappeared and before I could say anything called the crew onstage and apologized for her tirade and gave a very sincere thank you for the work they had been doing during our tech period, as it was not an easy show and they had indeed been doing great with some fairly complicated scene changes and transitions.

In hindsight I'm very glad it happened the way it did, as I think the crew, while slightly hurt at first, saw that they were indeed valued and appreciated and seemed to throw themselves into teching the end of the show with even more gusto than before.

I've thought about this from time to time.

At this point in my life, should something happen to make me leave stage management I could see myself going to culinary school.  I have no desire to work in the restaurant industry itself, but would instead be interested in becoming a personal chef.

Either that or find that nice doctor or lawyer who wants to let me be a house-husband and support me in the lifestyle I hope to become accustomed to  ;)

In terms of when health insurance kicks in it will all depend on where in the calendar your weeks fall. If all 12 weeks fell into one of the calendar quarters (Jan-March/April-June/July-Sept/Oct-Dec) then your insurance should kick in in about three months, if you choose to take the six months of coverage and not hold out to get a full year of coverage.  So say you got all 12 weeks in during the April-June window, you would be eligible to start coverage in the Oct-Dec quarter. However, if your weeks overlap into two quarters (say starting in the April-June quarter but not finishing until sometime in the July-Sept quarter) it is possible that you would not actually be eligible until January of the next year, just because when they do the look back to see who is eligible to be covered for the Oct-Dec quarter you may not have actually earned all of your weeks yet.

And, no matter when you do end up being eligible for coverage, congratulations on getting those weeks! It's a great feeling to know that you have that coming your way (I know that feeling well; at the end of my current contract I'll have my weeks to be covered through the end of 2013!)
