Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: PROPS: Breaking a vase
« on: Jul 01, 2015, 10:59 am »
We also built a breaking plate by pre-breaking a plate and then gluing it back together nightly. It worked beautifully, and we were able to use cheap but nice-looking items from the discount store, which saved a lot of money too!

Holy cow! Where was their stage manager in this? Another director who wants to use a real knife without safety measures.....

kittymcgee - glad that helped, and hope the person who did it has answers for you - BTDT has been a remarkable resource! And don't forget to add your own info to the list!

If you look under BTDT and enter the play's title, I see that someone has entered the show, so has done it and may well be able to advise -

The Hardline / Re: AEA Council Election 2015
« on: May 05, 2015, 12:20 pm »
YES - all AEA members on this board should vote. And (if I may electioneer a bit) please vote for Ruth E! She has the experience and the knowledge of work in the Eastern Region outside the Broadway Box - so vital for all of us working in places other than NYC.

And - also, please also vote for Doug Carfrae as the Western VP = we need his knowledge and experience as well, as we approach negotiations for Prodn, SET and LORT in the imminent future. We need the voice of someone who has worked these contracts and knows the people involved.

Thank you

Tools of the Trade / Re: A very silly ToTT

Oh my - and sheep, dogs, cows, and a dozen other animals (big more expensive) and insects (smaller less expensive) shapes and paint jobs. Too much fun!

How rare it is to find a marriage where people are in each other's faces 24/7 without strife. I understand the company's financial solution of finding one house, but having no place to go and be with other people 365 days of the year is just cruel and unusual punishment. You all need places and times to be in spaces that have nothing to do with the theater and nothing to do with work companions.

First, frankly the theatre should start looking for another sound person yesterday.

Second, they need to help you find alternative living spaces before you kill each other. Or a neutral space when you need a break. Think about how strenuous and lengthy the process is to find compatible companions for living colonies or space exploration. This, on the other hand, is being treated like a reality show.

Given the situation, and the fact that right now you guys have limited power, you have a few options. You can 1) take the gent aside and quietly tell him the problem, if he is someone who will listen - alternatively have the whole house calmly and nicely sit down w this person and explain that they are causing turmoil for everyone; 2) find another place to live and move there (maybe with the entire company of techs); 3) present this as hypothetical to someone you trust in the office and ask for advice; or 4) quit en masse (or threaten to quit en masse). Of course, you can also inform on him to the gf across the country. Or make sure the girl here knows of his condition to bring that person to your house.

But regardless, tension amongst y'all will only build if there is no outlet or clean space, and if it hasn't already, will seep in the work and the level of snark inside the theater, creating problems in the workspace.

I was gonna say - great way to discover all kinds of clever and creative ways to hide script pages, speeches and directional instructions. Under the covers, in a book on the bed table, under and over and inside all kinds of props and costumes.

The Green Room / Re: Who are we, anyway...?
« on: Apr 12, 2015, 11:34 pm »
In theory, at this year's TCG in Cleveland there was a segment on SMs but I wasn't able to go - however, in theory there is discussion abt this. And, when I raised the issue of SMs, the folks attending those sessions strongly agreed that a good SM is worth their weight in gold. Just, none of them thought to bring it up until I did.....

That puts a totally different spin on this. If you can't take action to make them safe, along with all the other safety procedures enumerated above, then your director needs to get over himself. A good prop shop will have replicas that are safer to use (w the same codicils as noted above) and those shd be used instead. As is, you are right, it is indeed a recipe for disaster.

Employment / Re: "What Not To Post": Job Listing edition
« on: Mar 31, 2015, 11:59 am »
in terms of the degree, in CA you have to have an MFA to teach at the community college level, so that may be a local hiring requirement. And, well, it looks like the job description is lifted from an AEA agreement. Which, in and of itself, is quite curious....
