I really don't feel that stage management is something that can be taught in a class.

Although nothing can replace experience, I find the class at my school damn useful.  Not only does our teacher help us learn a system that works for us to do paperwork, tape out a ground plan, take blocking notes, etc (things that you can learn by doing, but when they're taught in a classroom setting there's no pressure to get it right the first time and no consequences if you do it wrong) - it's also a great place to discuss our current SM experiences.  We have a support system in our class that's very helpful when it comes to problem solving etc.

I'm at Brandeis University right now

Yeah! Brandeis!

I second Lisa - I love the program here and feel like I'm getting solid training to be an SM and also a nice liberal arts education.  Sweet.

We use Choice (http://www.choiceticketing.com/), but that would also be a sizable investment.  Is the company willing to pay for a better ticketing system?

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / SCENERY: Furniture
« on: Nov 01, 2007, 12:43 am »
(I'm not sure where to put this, mods, feel free to move...)

Who, ultimately, is responsible for furniture in a show?  Is it the props master or the set designer?

I am in college right now and keep getting different answers from professionals in the department.  I'd like to know who's in charge in the professional world so that I can impart this knowledge to my props master and set designer on an undergrad level...neither of whom thinks it is their job (so no one is doing it!).

Thanks!

Employment / Re: Summer Internships

This summer I interned at Lost Nation Theater in Montpelier, VT and *loved* it.  They provide housing as well as a weekly stipend.  PM me if you'd like more information.

I like to use a bell.  I find the "ding" is a lot less condescending than a whistle could be viewed, and combined with getting up on a chair it works for me.

Good luck!

Has anyone had any luck finding nice-looking, comfortable, practical black shoes that are also vegetarian?

Luckily there's a button that sends the document to Entourage and all I have to do is address it.

Actually, you can do that on a PC too - there's a button at the top next to the save button.  It's wicked useful.

I'd probably do the same thing I'd do with slips of paper - paperclip them together and hand them out.

I'm addicted to Post-it's, so I think that's a great idea.  The obvious advantage over strips of paper is that you can stick them in your script and not worry about losing them.

What if there was an arrow on the post-it, too, so that when it gets hectic and you don't have time to write everything down right away, you can just point the arrow at the line that was messed up and go back later to fill out the rest of the info?

So mine would look like this:

Skip  Rev Call  Drop  Add  Cue

I agree, though, it would get expensive - I'd love to try it out to see if it's worth it!

I found some zip binder covers by Mead in their Five-Star First Gear series.  It came with a removable 3-ring binder on a plastic backing.  I removed that, and was able to slip in my own full binder, so that I can interchange binders between shows.

Erin, what a fabulous idea!  That way you can keep your office supplies the same from show to show, and only the paperwork changes.  Genius!

Yup.  The link ("Jump to Resume Browser") is near the bottom of the homepage under "File Cabinet".

I usually put cue errors in - "SQ 5 was late" - and leave it at that.  In my opinion, the designers/producers don't need to know whose fault it was, only that it's not usually like that.  If the reason for the error is something that would go in the report anyway (like, say, a headset stopped working or something like that), then I'd make that clear in the report.

I've started creating an Access database template...I think it'll take me a while, but when it's done I'll post it (free and editable!).
