Smoke drops are great, but they are HIGHLY toxic, so I would recommend extreme caution using on someone's body...

Tools of the Trade / Re: Glow-in-the-dark Glow tape
« on: Mar 09, 2011, 11:19 am »
We have been using it this season, and have been overall pretty happy with it.  It doesn't glow as strongly as the old version, but is sufficiently bright enough to see in blackouts, etc.  It sticks much better than traditional glow tape (although not as well as gaff), but can be covered with clear marley tape on the floor if the glow is in small pieces (particularly when used for dance).  It is much faster to put down than the paper backed glow and can be torn instead of having to be cut with scissors.

I learned more at DCTC in the 4 months I was an intern (and the following 7 years that I worked there) than I did in 4 years of college.  It was a really great place to work.  The hours can be kind of crazy, but their SM team is wonderful to work with, and the facility is one of the best in the country (shops, rehearsal spaces and offices all in the same building, which is across the street from the theatres.  Feel free to PM me if you have specific questions.

Also, Denver is awesome...  Mountains, good weather, no bugs...  You can't beat it!  (can you tell that I miss it after the east coast winter this year??!)

Employment / Re: Pictures
« on: Mar 01, 2011, 05:58 pm »
Although the request for a SM photo with an application is an odd one, if you do choose to send a photo it should be a professional looking shot and not just a snapshot.   (The question of whether they should or shouldn't ask for it is separate issue).
Although employers should not be judging you on your gender, age, race, etc. that may be apparent in your photo, they can judge based on the quality of the materials you send them, and a picture with someone obviously cropped out, or with a party in the background or something similar doesn't present a professional image.  It would be like sending someone a resume with hand written notes.  It is a good way to just have your stuff tossed instead of read.

Matthew - thank you for your thoughtful reply.  These are many of the same discussions that we we have had about starting an intern program, and whether the purpose is to fill in labor or to actually provide an educational experience for someone.  Is it ok with you if I pass your comment on to our team?

Thanks!

130
Just to clarify, it would be a $500 stipend for the run of the show (~7 weeks work).  $500 a week would be awesome, but is well beyond any budget we would have.

Thank you all for your input.  Would it change your responses at all if there were time in the schedule that someone could have another job?  (ie only day rehearsals or only evenings?)

131
We are investigating starting an internship program at our company, and are having some disagreements about what we should offer as compensation.  We would be able to offer college credit, but would like to add some other incentives other than the experience working with a professional company on a variety of shows.
Some guidelines are professional company connected to a university, large scale musicals and operas.  Would serve as primary SM in rehearsals and ASM in tech and performance.  Typical schedule is 5 weeks rehearsal, 1 week tech, 1 week performance.  There would not be housing.

Any input or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

You can try Backstage Hardware (617.330.1422) in the Seaport district.  I have also had pretty good success with using diet soda, which has a similar stickiness to regular, but doesn't have the sugar to attract ants, etc...

The Green Room / Trivia Tournament III - 2.0.11
« on: Jan 02, 2011, 10:03 pm »
Since it is a whole new year, and the other thread was getting really long, here is a brand new 2011 trivia thread!!

If you're new to SMNet, here's the instructions for playing trivia:

To play, click here http://www.funtrivia.com/private/main.cfm?tid=76555.

Please register over there with the same username there as you use here so you can be tracked in the standings.

To quote PSMKay -
"To register, you will need the tournament password.   Use the same password as you use for the SMNetwork resume browser.  The one that starts with the letter f.  The password is visible on the main page of smnetwork in the descriptive text of a forum that is visible only to registered, logged in members.  Please do not PM the password or post the password publicly.  The hints that have been given so far in this post should be more than sufficient for figuring it out.  The trivia tournament is TOUGH and figuring out the password is meant as a warm-up for you."

There's a different set of questions every day of the week.  Topics are chosen by a player in the top ten who hasn't picked topics in the past year.
