I'd agree aside from medical reports... I think med forms should be under lock and key at all times. Available only to Company Management...

I guess this is easier if you have a full-time company manager and your rehearsals take place during the regular business hours.  ???

One page please...

As an employer I prefer that references be on the same page....

as a job-seeker I used to put references on a separate sheet.  ::)

Yeah, I think if there isn't a 24 hour notice you must pay.

(I actually think a week's notice is only fair... however, most producers don't agree with me!)  :P

We've started using our cell phone's to take pictures... particularly of the Xmas tree set-up in Nutcracker...

Our Nutcracker has a "ground-row" of gifts in front of the Xmas tree to block sight-lines of the Act I Doll's entrances and also to block the piles of pre-grown Xmas tree branches.

a box of golf pencils is a good way to have abunch around that you don't care about ('cause you'd never use them) so you don't feel the need to 'rent' your stash...

As far as illegal substances are concerned you'd be surprised if you looked at most of your employee handbook's they will state to random drug testing can be done- and positive tests will result in termination.  Now; most Non-profita are too poor to be able to afford the randomized drug testing- but if an ED wants to do they are generally fully within their rights. Also- most organizations can fire you for refusing to take a drug test.

This became a tough situation for an organization I once worked at who did a random drug test and ended up short 3 leading roles for the production which opened in less than a week...

Also, another organization I worked in had 2 folks arrested on opening night for posession. They got to spend the night in jail because everyone they knew in town was in the show, and by the timethe curtain came in again the local bondsman had closed for the night. I do admit no one hurried out to try to help them as we had just had a put-in rehearsa lat half hour to get 2 new folks on and we were all pretty annoyed at our arrested friends.

(FYI; these are men who went to jail in their tights...They were very sad in the morning...)

Final story- a completely different organization's AD & ED grew pot in their back yard's... ! A shock to me when I was so young & impressionable!

My advice- Be very careful when making your choices.... Remember how your decisions both in and out of the studio will have consequences for those around you.

It looks like most of what I would have replied has been replied already aside from one thing...

It is just NEVER EVER appropriate that the SM be reading or working on anything non-show related in rehearsal. If I ever had an assistant be reading or crossword puzzling etc... I'd be mortified and to be perfectly frank; they'd probably never work for me again.

Music rehearsal is a great chance for you to give your assistant's the night off, or a chance for them to be working on paperwork etc... If you have already done absolutely everything you can think of to do in connection to the show, and it's the 76849th hour of music rehearsal for the same 3 bar's of music, then you could ask the music director if they would mind if you worked in your office/ computer lab for the next 20 minutes or so. But I would be worried about being out of the rehearsal room for more than 20 minutes- you'd be bound to miss something.

I'd really suggest that you spend the time with the score in music rehearsal learning every nuance of every note to be played- it will really help you out when it comes to calling the show.

Just my suggestions.... Enjoy your musical!  ;D

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: Paying for parking

By the by- There is no public parking at or even nearby any of the venues my company performs at- everyone must pay for parking... or take public transit.

Good luck!

How weird... Are the costumes all black?  :-\

I always ask the dancers that they wear colours representative of their cotumes for the spacing rehearsal-
So, I suppose if the costumes were all black then that would make sense.

Quick note on FEELING:

I've just finished calling a show that I had only seen once before opening and it was such a challenge- I'm so used to KNOWING the show that I had a heck of a time calling this one!

I must encourage everyone to keep your skills sharp in the sense of FEELING the cueing so you are confident in your abilities to call without KNOWING...

 ;D

As an employer I appericiate the follow up Thank you letter- it definately puts people on the top of my list to re-hire as it indicates that they are truely interested in working with the organization in the future.  ;D
