Once back in college we did a co-production with an equity theatre and it was a weird day when technically the university was closed but the theater hadn't officially cancelled rehearsal and the director really wanted to have the rehearsal so I remember having a snowball fight right outside of the theater on campus while they were rehearsing inside, cause the SM and some of the actors were local or equity, but all the students were like "nope it's a snow day." Plus that was the longest rehearsal process of anyone's life so it was so unnecessary.

Nothing really bad, but the word sexy shows up a lot...

I got flagged for "crack" up laughing, and photo "bomb" lol.

Same response...oh well at least my name is out there now.

Hmm...I was just going to say bigger font.  :)

Others have given great advice,  Highlight SM work, but include your other work until you don't have to anymore.

"Please, for the love of God, don't shoot it like that. We will get so much flak."

If only some more people had said that when filming  the first season.....

The Green Room / Re: The things we give up for theatre
« on: Feb 03, 2013, 04:25 pm »
Many family reunions that always take place during the summer.
My nephews birthdays which I hate to miss.
Time with my partner because of scheduling, travel, and cheap theaters don't give us enough money to afford to have families.
Money from other jobs that I could have had/taken.

And (on a not serious note) I missed the Spice Girls Reunion Concert which I really wanted to freaking go to, but I had stupid rehearsal.
Sadly though it's really all those little things that start to get to you.

When I was updating the backstage track for a long running show I added  "When certain performer is on USR dance track be prepared to dodge flying rubber bra or be hit in the face with said bra."
Each person has there own cue sheet for that track but sometimes people look at others for inspiration, I hope someone took that gem.  :)

I sort of enjoyed this article about SMASH. I haven't previewed the second season yet, so I have no idea if anything has improved, but I find this interesting.

Tools of the Trade / Re: Useful iPad apps
« on: Feb 02, 2013, 05:58 pm »
I've had mine for a while now, haven't used it on the job yet but I can think of a lot of good apps.

Evernote/Notes - for jotting down ideas.
Dropbox/Google Drive - For accessing files
Calculator/Clock/Calendar/Camera - for obvious reasons
Email/Skype - For communicating

Other things I find useful but slightly less SM specific:
Accuweather - For outdoor shows, I prefer it to weather channel, because weather channel apps have historically been bad so I avoid them.
Linkedin/Facebook - For Networking
GasBuddy - When traveling to another city this helps you find the best gas prices around.
Expensify - If you need to track expenses (TAX season!) You can upload receipts so you don't have to cart them around and they can't fade.
Dragon- For dictating notes if you don't feel like typing.

I really enjoy being a research subject for studies and trials. I live in Boston so it helps that there are a million and a half medical schools and hospitals but it's fun easy money for a few hours when I'm not doing anything else anyway.

I'm fine with it just being plain ole laptop we're judging, but tools are judged on what they help us to do. Accessing the Internet is one of the things laptops do, making origami is one of the things paper helps us to do, so shouldn't tools be judged on this? Basically if it was Laptop + Internet vs. paper + Internet I would choose laptop obviously, but even if it was paper and pen vs. laptop and pen, I would still choose laptop because I could throw the pen away and still get a million more things done with my laptop. Paper is great and useful and I would struggle to do a production without it, but its just not a better tool, it is good at what it does and we need it but laptops are more versatile,  safer to use for storing information and documents, they are always updating and changing to become more useful, they have benefits we haven't even discovered or perfected yet, can you say the same about paper?

120
I was originally gunning for paper but then I really thought about it, yes I could do a show(with some difficulty) without either one, but if someone said you can only choose one, which is the best most useful tool for you, I would have to say laptop, anything I would need to work around because i did not have paper would be worth it for the convenience of emails, and excel, and dictionaries, and word processors, and internet, and Dropbox, and everything. Yes even now I can think of things that would be very hard to do, but not impossible. It's not about whether people have done it without a laptop in the past, it's about whether laptops have changed the world of stage managers, whether they have taken the throne as a the king of tools for our kind.
