The Green Room / Re: NYTIMES: Actor Housing
« on: Aug 31, 2012, 10:19 am »
My worst was in New Mexico. I opened the door only to see the hundreds of cockroaches run into the bedroom..

Jealous. They came to my school for the 2004 elections, and the desk that he used each night is now in a lobby.
Have fun! An opportunity like this doesn't come around so often.

Funny you should mention animals...

In the park there are a few hawks that take up residence. During tech and preview they decided to perch on our lighting trusses. One time during our dinner break, a hawk joined us by eating his dinner on the truss.
Never thought my ASM would have to ask run crew to sweep up pigeon feathers from the stage..

Friday night's performance was canceled due to the Tornado watch.

We were able to do shows on Saturday and Sunday. Sunday night we had the pleasure of a drunk, shirtless man to join our cast in the middle of a scene. It took the Director, Sound Designer (who just came to watch closing night), Site supervisor, and finally a Park Ranger to pull him offstage.

In the 17 years that they have done Shakespeare in the Common, that was a first.

Self-Promotion / Coriolanus-Commonwealth Shakespeare Company
« on: Aug 06, 2012, 03:58 pm »
If you're in Boston this week head to Boston Common to check out Commonwealth Shakespeare Company's free production of Coriolanus. I'm the PSM, and it has been the most wonderful, challenging, terrifying production I have worked on in quite some time.  The cast is wonderful and my stage management staff has been amazing!

Did I mention it's free? It closes Sunday 8/12.

My show had it's press opening last night. I hate to admit it but my calling/blocking script looks like a hurricane went through it.

I'm pretty old-school when it comes to my prompt script but next time I will join the 21st century and type up my script.

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: Surprise Load In
« on: Jun 20, 2012, 01:35 pm »
It sounds like you did the best you could in this situation. The set arrived, rehearsal happened, and no one was injured.  If the theatre does some sort of post mortem following the production then inform them that load-ins should not come as a surprise.

Only you can decide if stage managing is the right path for you. I'm sorry that a director bruised your ego, but throughout this industry you will encounter directors, designers, actors, etc that can unintentionally chip away your confidence. It's up to you to grow a tough skin and know what it takes to get the work done.
I've been at this for sixteen years and I still have to say to myself, "Okay, it's time to grow a set"  ;)

Employment / Re: Following up on an application
« on: Jun 06, 2012, 03:01 pm »
Double check the job posting to make sure it doesn't say anywhere "No phone calls please".  Many places do not want their phone lines flooded with job inquiries; so if it says that then do not call.

Personally, I'm a wimp. I would rather email than call. I can handle a rejection email rather than a rejection phone call. But if they allow phone calls and you feel more comfortable calling, do it before/after hours so you can leave a voicemail.

My general speech is this: "Hi my name is (name here) and I recently applied for the (job here). I'm just checking on the status of the position. Feel free to contact me at (phone number here). Thank you very much and have a great day." Can be adjusted to an email.

Good luck!

Everyone that wears blacks will match. None of this "I've washed the shirt too many times and it's a faded black" or "My black pants look dark blue under a clip light".
Nope. Perfect black all the time.

5. The rehearsal room will be exactly the same size as the stage.

But there must be something that I'm forgetting. Help me write the rulebook?

I had that. It was glorious.

Working wireless headsets for backstage

Stage Management copier will have a scanner, three hole punch, and will never, ever, brake.

The Green Room / Re: Travel Advice: I'm going to Tokyo

I've never been.

If you are interested in what to eat I would suggest checking out Anthony Bourdain "No Reservations" or his other show "The Layover". He went there a few times and can at least give you ideas on where to eat.
I think you can find these episodes on the Travel Channel.

Have fun!
