Dear all,

Just a quick note to say thank you. This was my Dear Abby, and I've gone with Job B!

Give it 24 hours, then if you haven't heard, give them a ring.

Is dance floor stretchy? I wouldn't have said it is....

My main query is why you can't treat it as though it was dance floor. What do you fear will happen?

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: CALLING: calling cues
« on: Dec 28, 2013, 08:24 am »
I would either call it as a normal cue, pre-empting slightly more than normal and giving the GO at the correct point, or I would give a Standby as follows:

"Standby please LX99, which is a visual on 'Jack' pressing the light switch."

I would have mentioned these cues to the Op beforehand, of course. I would only ever do this if it was a VERY busy sequence, the Op was the same for every performance and I just couldn't call it/watch the stage for a long time.

Tools of the Trade / Re: Useful iPhone apps?

I've never really understood the use for a specific timing app. What's wrong with either using a stopwatch, or just working it out from the time you started/stopped?

How would you describe a design meeting? I'm sure I have been to some, but I guess I call them by a different name.

Is there normally an ASM on the tour, or are they creating an extra role for your placement?

Stage Management: Other / Re: Teaching Score Reading
« on: Nov 23, 2013, 11:58 pm »
Thank for all your suggestions guys!

Ben, that sounds like a fantastic idea! I'll have a hunt and a play tomorrow.

BLee, IMSP is a site I already use regularly (pretty much every opera and ballet thats 100+ years old is on there, and quality is usually pretty good) - my concern was finding something that would be a bit easier/modern, as thats the stuff is licensed.

Stage Management: Other / Teaching Score Reading
« on: Nov 22, 2013, 11:14 am »
Hi all,

I've been asked to teach a couple of people to follow a score, and I'm a little unsure what music to use? Does anyone have any recommendations for unlicensed scores (that I can get from IMSLP or similar) that would be a good starting point?

I have quite a lot of the more difficult stuff, but it's really simple stuff I'm struggling with. I used to use some from musicals, but I stupidly threw it away!

Thanks!

The Hardline / Re: Half Hour Call
« on: Nov 01, 2013, 09:31 pm »
What really made my deputy accept my position was when I reminded him that I can't call people prior to half-hour without making it a rehearsal call.  When I have to give notes, half-hour is when the actor is on the clock.

Going OT here very slightly - what if wigs/makeup/wardrobe took more than 30 minutes? Would there have to be a rehearsal call every night for that person?

OR, is this the situation for tech? Are there different rules for performances?

As someone who is not AEA or American, I'm curious about the provisions for this.

I would personally use AV instead of Tab - I don't think Tab would mean much this side of the Atlantic....

The Green Room / Re: Nice work if you can get it!

To put that into a little bit of context, $400,000 is *roughly* 5 times what an equivalent person would earn at the Royal Opera House over here...

For me, I'd do a weekly schedule, distributed on the previous Friday afternoon. Then any changes must be announced 24 hours in advance, or with the affected persons' agreement.

Employment / PAY: Daily Rate
« on: Aug 02, 2013, 09:26 am »
Hi everyone,

I'm doing a job that runs for 4 weeks and 4 days. We've discussed the weekly rate, but I'm not sure what to divide it by to find out the daily rate, and how much I'll earn from the 4 days -5, 6 or 7?

What do you think?

Thanks,

C
