Hi everyone-

My fabulous significant other has created a new stage management app for the iPhone platform, and is looking for testers.  It is geared towards data management (contact info, scene charts, props lists, etc).  He is looking for people with the following:

-has iPhone, iPod, or iPad running IOS 4
-willing to use the app for at least one show worth of data
-willing to write notes/comments on how they would improve the app or bugs or what they like

You would get:
-a Beta version of the app
-a free copy of the finalized version when it is released ($9.99 estimated value)
-our unending thanks and admiration

If you are interested, please PM me with a email address that he can use to send you the beta version.

Thank you!!

There's a part of me that wonders - WWMD? (What would Matthew Shiner Do?)

I love this idea!!

In addition to everything that loebtmc said, a few more ideas...
1) you may want to have the director consider whether it is a type of show that the actors could be part of the environment, ie could catering set up an extra table that the actors would be seated at, and then they could step up to the performance area when they hear the cue.
2) is it possible for you to go to the venue to do a walk through?  That would give you a sense of what the space looks like and you could measure areas that would be used for performance.  It will never be as structured as a traditional show tape-out, but would tell you if you have 100 sq ft or 1000 sq feet, and if it is a square or a circle.
3) Definitely breath and go with the flow.  For all of their high maintenance-ness, actors are surprisingly flexible, and will fill the space they have.  And it is the rare actor who tries to walk through a hedge because "it wasn't there in rehearsal..."
4) Is it possible to rehearse in some sort of similar situation?  It may involve a bit of guerrilla theatre, but if you have a seen that takes place in a crowd, can you go to a bus station or big restaurant (with site management approval), and do a trial run of working around people or tables?

Let us know how it goes! :-)

The Green Room / Re: TEAM BUILDING - Part One - The Assistant
« on: Jun 17, 2011, 11:32 am »
In addition to all of the great suggestions above, I also look for someone who has strengths that I don't.  Since being an SM and an ASM are very different jobs, I try to work with people who are strong ASMs, and not just biding their time until they can step up and be the SM.  For example, my current (awesome!) assistant is really good with the small details of props tracking and paperwork, and I am better with the big picture and people management.  It makes us a more well rounded team and better serves the shows.
The longer I work with someone the better team we are.  We learn the other person's strengths and weakness, and can better tell when the other person is having a bad day and can pick up the slack.

I do LOVE the idea of cool costumes and awesome nicknames!!

if "creativity" implies wacky schemes

I would be the first to claim there should be no schemes in stage management, wacky or otherwise.

Isn't that a large part of what we do though?  Make sure that other people's wacky schemes can happen and not kill anyone?

Tools of the Trade / Re: Spike marks on peat/bark floor?
« on: May 21, 2011, 04:37 pm »
What about some sort of foam rod/tube that could be set into the bark or attached to the floor underneath, but would still be actor safe if they fell on it?  I am  not sure if they are available in Ireland, but some of the products made by Nerf (the darts in particular) are similar to what I was thinking.  They could be painted to blend with the floor treatment but be enough different that they could still be found.

Keep us updated on what you find that works!

Yeah, I usually consider myself an educated person, but days like that (or any time it is theatre) make me feel pretty dumb... :-)
