I'm interested too.

I also signed up for an invite, and I'm happy to extend the same offer should I receive one.

Employment / Re: Listing a reading on your resume
« on: Sep 21, 2009, 12:01 pm »
I list them as well, and just note that it's a reading, so my resume looks like this in the show name column:

50 Words
Close Ties
Raised by Lesbians
Flood (by Tina Howe) (Staged Reading)

The Hardline / Re: TDF Membership
« on: Sep 19, 2009, 03:11 pm »
I had a membership last year and I thought it was well worth the $27.50 that I spent. I saw a number of shows for less than $50, so the money I spent on the membership was far less than what I spent.

I didn't renew this year b/c I'm going on tour in January and also b/c my friend gets a lot of comps for b'way and off b'way through her job, so I thought it wasn't necessary. I have enough friends with memberships that if I felt the need I could buy through them for one or two shows.

I agree with Becky.

Also, I'll point out that if you're doing the 8-hour days, you cannot rehearsal starting at 12n (if you're calling your AEA cast for that whole time) because according to the rules, 'the combined rehearsal and performance time shall not exceed
eight hours.' Unless your show is 90 minutes or less in length.

Has anyone heard about Daryl Eisenberg (casting director) and the twitter debacle?
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/15/theater/15tweet.html

She tweeted about the actors as soon as they left the room, and some of the tweets were really mean

From what I understand, it wasn't just after they left - some of this happened during auditions. Regardles, it's unprofessional, not to mention rude and just plain despicable. Especially if your profile was public (as hers was at the time).

So, not such a fan of the World: UK category.  There wasn't a single question that I didn't just have to guess on.

Sorry ! It's my revenge for all the questions I have to guess about US baseball teams, snack foods, and so on  :)

Lizzie

Hehehe Brits take back the trivia! Maybe there will be some Doctor Who questions and I won't feel so uneducated this week...

On my summer break, I have been traveling around Europe visiting friends and seeing sites.

So far, I have gone to:
Amsterdam, Paris, Berlin, Munich, Barcelona, Madrid, done a road trip/ beach tour of Southern Portugal and Spain, Aix-en-Provence, Avignon, Zurich, Bern, Luzanne, Interlochen, Warsaw, Krakow, Amsterdam (again), Paris (again)

Still on the itinerary:
Stockholm, Oslo, Copenhagen, Cyprus, Rome, Sicily, Athens, Crete, Ephesus, Milan, Mulhouse

It has been busy and crazy so far. Would you believe my recent trip to Amsterdam was to rest and relax and do laundry?

I am amazingly jealous of your travels! Your work too, but mostly your travels as I sit sweltering in the summer heat of the city with my 1 vacation in years still a month away!

Safe and fun travels to you!

The Hardline / Re: TYA Questions to Ask
« on: Aug 02, 2009, 02:52 pm »
So I should follow up and say that I've gotten the job! I actually found out on June 23rd and have been pretty excited about it, I can't believe that I forgot to post something!

I did get some more details about what some of the 'additional duties' are, and I think I'm pretty lucky because as part of our touring company we have 4 technicians: TD/Sound, Lighting Dir., Costumes/Props, Open Captions (non-union ASM). I looks as though a lot of my responsibility on the road will be related to company management and backstage adjustment at each venue. And of course the unexpected.

The show is called Nobody's Perfect - it's a musical that is simulatiously spoken/sung and in ASL, based on a children's book by Marlee Matlin. The show was performed at the Kennedy Center in 2007 (i think) and is now going out on tour in 2010. Additionally, it's going to be option captioned as well. I think it's the first show of this nature to be live captioned.

We'll be in Washington, DC for 3 weeks of rehearsal and then a 14-week national tour - I'm especially excited about the travel, even though I know there won't be much tourist time - I've never been west of Dayton, OH.

Our tour stops are:
Washington, DC
Atlanta, GA
Texarkana, TX
Gilbert, AZ
Irvine, CA
Poway, CA
La Mirada, CA
Las Vegas, NV
Queen Creek, AZ
Cerritos, CA
La Crosse, WI
Lincoln, NE
Springfield, IL
Paducah, KY
Des Moines, IA
Junction City, KS
Memphis, TN
Columbus, OH
Elyria, OH
Sylvania, OH
Greenville, NC
Washington, NC
Spartanburg, SC
Punta Gorda, FL
West Palm Beach, FL
Orange Park, FL
Sarasota, FL
Pembroke, NC
Staten Island, NY
New York, NY
Brooklyn, NY
Flushing, NY
Buffalo, NY

Outside of NYC and DC, I've only been to Sarasota and Columbus, so feel free to let me know where to go and what to do! And come see the show!

The Hardline / Re: AEA Question

I think I agree with your foul call. If the agreement stipulates a 2-SM contract, then and emergency cover should have been called in.

The only stipulation I could see would be if the PA was already working on the show, and permission from Equity was given to have that PA cover the ASM's track for those performances. Since the theatre made the decision to do this, I don't think that counts.

The Green Room / Re: Best reason from an actor for being late
« on: Jul 09, 2009, 05:21 pm »
"You're my one phone call. I got arrested for drunkenly stripping in front of a cop at WaWa last night."

The AD went on for him for the matinee, and the actor came right from the courthouse for the evening performance.

Employment / Re: Forced to be stuck in a rut. Please help.
« on: Jun 30, 2009, 11:48 pm »
Hello again. More clarification.

It was understood that I had the position because after I applied for it, my boss e-mailed me back saying that he would love to have me for the job. After a friend tipped me off, I called and asked. I found out another person was SM. Later it changed to a second person.

I consider it high-tension because in the last meeting on a similar topic was with both my current boss and the person who is the current SM, and it did not work out well at all. To make a long story short, after any private meeting between me and the SM about understanding that no one is after each other's job, the second we leave that room, the situation is flipped around when she speaks to every one. Regardless of how many times we clarify our perspectives at our meeting. (It's a very abbreviated version of a long story.)

Can I just ask a silly question? Why do you want to work for these people so badly if this is how they treat not only you, but what seems to be all of the people that work for them?!

This is a lesson that took me a while to learn. There are some things and some people that you are just better than. It's not necessarily an insult to them, but more of an understanding of your own self worth.

I think that your best course of action is to be as blunt, but as respectful as possible.

Tell him exactly what is lacking for you as a SM in your current role, and that as such, you would like the opportunity to grow as a stage manager and this SM role would be the ideal opportunity to do so.

Part of getting your point across is being able to stand your ground. Don't let him brush you off, and if he has reasons for not giving you this job, ask why. You're entitled to a reason.
