College and Graduate Studies / Transferring to Canada
« on: Jun 04, 2010, 05:01 pm »
Hey all. Although I'm very happy here at my current school, I'm looking into transferring to a university in Canada for personal reasons. I've been researching on my own, but I seem to get lost under the heaps of information available online. I was wondering if anyone here could help out with some questions I had, since my knowledge of Canadian universities is severely lacking.

1) Are there any big universities in Canada with a theatre design & production program? I'm hoping to find a program that's specific to theatre production, but not a sole SM degree, and also has a liberal arts component to it. The only major university I could find was UBC. Anyone know anything about UBC's theatre design & production program?

2) I want to go into SM-ing dance primarily, although I would still love to do opera, musical, and plays. Are there places in Canada where dance is specially strong?

Thanks!

College and Graduate Studies / Northwestern vs. UMich?
« on: Mar 31, 2009, 06:03 pm »
Hey everyone! So college decisions are out, and my final available choices are Northwestern University and University of Michigan. For Northwestern, I was accepted as a BA Theater major in the School of Communications. At UMich, I was accepted for the BFA Theatre Design & Production student. As I don't live in the U.S., there's no way for me to visit these colleges.

Are there any students at Northwestern or UMich here that could give me some insight into the programs? Or anyone else who graduated from either school? Thanks :)

Can't find the edit button. Hm.

Anyway, I forgot to add what type of college I'm looking for. I'm looking for a college where I can build great connections for the theatre world after college. I'm also hoping to minor in Biology. And as for the student body, I'm looking for one where I can get lost in the crowd, but still have a close group of friends, and be involved in school clubs. Also, I'm of course looking for chances to help out with any backstage on and off campus, the more experience the better!

Employment / Where do I begin?
« on: Mar 20, 2009, 04:36 pm »
Hey all. I'm a senior in high school, about to go off to college to study technical theatre in college, in hopes of becoming a stage manager or a production manager on Broadway.

The thing is... I don't know what to expect! I come from a country where theatre is practically nonexistent and I'm moving to the States to pursue my dreams. But after my 4 years of college, I have no idea what to do or what to expect.

So what happens once you graduate college? Will I start out with as a PA on Broadway, or is that too much of a stretch already? What kind of jobs did you use to get by in the earlier years, if any? How long until you can finance yourself just on your stage managing job? Will there be any companies willing to sort out my visa issue? Are there people out there who are actually crazy enough to date us stage managers? ;)

I'm sorry if these questions are stupid! I love stage managing with all my heart, but I just want an idea of what I should be expecting after college.

Thanks!

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Working with animals?
« on: Mar 11, 2009, 06:07 pm »
No, I don't mean high school students ;) Our high school's putting on "Inherit the Wind" soon, and there's a monkey in the script. I simply assumed that we would use a puppet or something, but I was told today that we would be using a live monkey.

Cue major freak out.

I've never had to work with animals before, and it's quite honestly a bit frightening. Are there any tips for working with animals in the play?
