Forgive me, I was under the impression it was meant that one would sit at the stage door that overlooks the stage or peek from behind a curtain the entire show, instead of doing ones job.  I was mistaken.  Yes, I do know one must watch the show, especially since high school and junior high students have the tendency to drop their props on stage, and I'm frantically radioing the sound booth to give me a break between songs or whatnot so I can run out there before the pointe dancers go on pointe on a rolling stick. (Yes, it has happened....she broke her ankle...almost snapped it. bad....bad.) I do agree with the directing comment however.

WOW - I have never heard of professional shows where practical jokes are seen/heard by the audience and/or in any way disrupt or alter the show!

....why not? The actors themselves are as human as anyone else.  They deserve to have a little fun every once and a while. Granted, they are paid enormously, but I'm sure that the directors and producers and whatnot expect SOMETHING to happen....

*grimaces* Ouch. That makes my hands hurt just thinking about that....I don't recommend hurting yourself, unless of course you like that sort of thing...then by all means. lol
There are sorts of gloves that are thinner, if you are as afraid as iamchristuffin, but most definitely do NOT go bare-handed....ouch ouch ouch!

Unfortunately you are there to work

OK, I know that there IS a difference between an actual show and a rehearsal....but come on. How many times do you have to watch the show? I myself am guilty of occasionally peeking through the curtain, but if you want to keep your job, I would stop trying to watch the ENTIRE show....
Best of luck.

:D! I SM at a performing arts high school, and it's a charter school.  So kicking kids out is easy-peasy.  I believe, that one should not necessarily discourage practical jokes, but instead, warn that if it's anything too serious, consequences could occur.  Here, if it is extremely detrimental to the show, they are either A: Kicked out of all future productions at the school or B: Kicked out entirely, depending on the case.  Part of the fun of doing shows, is the practical jokes played on closing night.  Especially when the audience has no idea what just happened, but there's lots of snickering backstage.
I always threaten to pull them, but my kids have never done anything too horrible, so it's fun.  I try not to be such a downer about everything.

Though this is quite an old post....I have a very different opinion. I have found that safety pins are quite handy....slap some safety pins on the guys butt, and tell him to be careful, *then* go find the pants. I would not hold the show for 10 minutes...
But...my opinion is mine own. :) Do what you are told is the best word of advice.  If you aren't told, follow your gut.  It proves true most of the time. :)

I personally prefer horseback riding gloves....strange, I know.
I have horses though, and ride often, so I have an excuse! :) They provide a very firm grip, and if you get the Velcro type, they are easy to take on and off, and fit in your back pocket.
Best of luck.

I must confess...reading this thread was quite humorous.  However, as amazingly awesome colorful band-aids are, when performing, it can be rather distracting, but again, this depends on the type of show you are doing.  If you are doing a show where the performers are mostly covered, then by all means, pull out the nifty colored band-aids. But if you do shows that have dancers who wear scanty clothing, nude and darker colored band-aids are the preference.  Again, it depends.  I wish I could use brightly colored band-aids!!!

Here are a few things I keep in my SMK. :)
-Needles
-Threads of many colors (White, black, bright colors, etc)
-Safety pins
-Mini scissors
-Tweezers
-Band-aids
-Gauze-wrap
-Knee and ankle braces
-Gauze
-Paper bags (for asthma attacks)
-Inhalers
-Tape
-Batteries
-Nail clippers
-Clear nail polish, (excellent for repairing torn dance tights)
-Pens and pencils
-and depending on the production, other small accessories.
