Employment / Re: Websites
« on: Jul 16, 2010, 02:45 pm »
I've got a website. One of my professors insisted we make one, and I've been maintaining it ever since.

www.jessicalynnwhitington.weebly.com

Weebly is a great website building site for a few reasons:
It's free as long as you keep the .weebly.com part in your URL
You can pay to upgrade and remove the weebly bit
If you don't code (like me!) it's really simple to set one up. You drag and drop the elements you want onto the page.
There are a bunch of different template styles for whatever your personality is.
You can have a word document or pdf for downloading (to put your resume up)

So yeah, it's an awesome site.

Employment / Work On A Cruise Ship?
« on: Jul 16, 2010, 02:27 pm »
So I was kicking some job ideas around with a friend of mine and the topic of cruise ships came up. I think it would a crazy awesome job, but in my initial digging around the internet - I haven't found much in the way of stage management. Has anyone here done something like that? Know of a place I should be looking?

The Green Room / Re: Best one-liner from a performance report

From a rehearsal report:

"(Actor) has expressed concerns that his biceps are too muscular to appropriately portray the age of the character. He requests sleeves for his costume, or a cloak."

We now have working walkies!! It's so beautiful. We didn't break them by trying to use the wrong headset, thankfully. And we finally found the right kind. The people at radioshack couldn't help us. Or Bust Buy. Or Circuit City. No, in the end it was man names Shmitty at a place called Gander Mountain that found what we needed. It is a strange strange world.

Thanks again for all your help. It looks like the show's going to run pretty smoothly now that we've gotten that taken care of.  ;D

Our Alpha Psi Omega treasurer picked these out and up for me, and apparently the wonderful guys at radio shack thought it work. But I will file that away, thanks again. I'll let you know how it works out and whether or not we did break the walkies.

Ok the walkies that we have are Motorola EM1000 Series (or maybe this one is the model #, not sure: KEM-PK 14190-67). We have been turning them off before plugging in the headset. As the instructions said. And now there is a new problem. This only happened when we tried this today, but the headsets won't stay plugged in. It's like the jack isn't big enough or something. So now when we plug them it, all the buttons inexplicably lock on the walkie. Also there is a switch on the headset cord that shows a mic on one end and a mic with a line through it at the other. We assumed that this was a mute button, but is it a VOX/PTT switch? (The headsets came sans instructions or label.)  But regardless of the postion of this switch, the walkies now become unusable as soon as we plug in the headsets.

Ok, so our theatre just got new headsets tonight. Headsets that don't work. For some reason whenever we plug the headsets into the walkies, they switch to a VOX setting and are useless to us. It seems like every time we get headsets they turn out to be that kind. Are we doing something wrong? Are most walkies like this? Is there a kind that we can get that don't? What brand/how much would these kind cost? I would be most grateful for any advice.

Thanks,
Jessie

A touch of background first, our theatre, like most I assume, is haunted. Atleast we're pretty sure. :) We've named the little ghost Trevor and to appease him and keep him from messing with things we sing "The Magical Trevor Song" (which comes from a hilarious flash cartoon of the same name.) before shows and tech rehearsals.

....it was about half way through our run of RUR. Just about the time that the sound board stops working, ya know? So I had my handful that night trying to just get everything to turn on. I had poor little freshmen trying to run things back stage for me that show, who was equally harried because the cast thought it might be fun to all run around in their underpants until about 10 til cue that night. He'd been calling up to me all night to get help to fix this or that, and finally I hear him over my headset sounding like he's about to cry or pass out and he says: "Jessie the actors won't leave me alone. Kelsy says she won't go on unless you've sung the magical Trevor song. They said they'd all sung it, but they don't think it will work unless you sing it too. What the hell are they talking about!?!" I of course relayed to him that I had already sung it. It's kind of a silly story, but it made me feel loved.
