I got brought into the process late. It is just a showcase where th actors or groups already have everything done. Each group has 30 min. to tech and have 17 min to perform. I was given these names at least 3 weeks in advance. I believe the misunderstanding took place when the TD asked his class who wanted to help out. I don't think these kids knew about the how much time it was all going to take- but good news I have found someone who is going to help...I am now excited to be apart of this...not so much stressed out..

So the deal is- I was given 2 names of possible ASM's and because they actually have worked in the space. But when I was talking with them about their availability they wanted to say I can be here for that but I can't be there for that. I thought to myself then why did you say you can help or do you realize that you have to be at tech to know what is going on!!!!!!!! So now, I just want to scream. I mean I know I am dealing with Students but when I was a student during tech I had to make sure I was there. The program I just came out of even the actors had to help strike the set...which took a whole Sunday. I just have high standards I guess or am I asking to much...

With my many questions about SM since this is my first time since college...I was wondering if there was a wrong and right way to call cues or is it up to you the SM? I am use to a stand-by then light cue 1 go or cue 1 go...so just to make sure I transition into the world from college I wanted to ask first....

I find it interesting that you want to get down to the very tiny details...I wish I could help but when my school went to do Noises Off it was cancel because of the content..yeah I know it was dumb- We couldn't do a lot of things there...

Thank you all so much...I am looking into Grad school my dream job is to teach students at the college level. I want to be a director too... I am really excited to learn new things...that is what makes this career interesting- if you stop learning than you need to stop this job...right???

So I have been reading all these blogs thinking that I can find some well thought out advice. I have just graduated college in May and I am now the SM for a showcase. I have done a lot of ASM or at least I thought I had. I look at all these messages and I am thinking that my education maybe wasn't as up to date as I thought...there are terms that I have never heard. My professors said they were teaching us real world theatre but there are things that I don't know anything about...So Theatre is mostly a learn as you go? Now I am stressed....

I would not mind doing lights but it is a board that is not computerized? I have always just programed cues in the computer and been able to just hit go this time not so much...so I was thinking that there are two students who want to work with me and if it fits then I will have them do either sound or lights...So what do you all think?

So I am stage managing a showcase at the end of the month. We have people to help but it has been said that I will work either the board or sound. I was wondering if any of you have had to do this and how do you handle stand-by's and calling the show if you are also doing something else. I also wanted to see if it was okay to ask for one of the helpers to help out in that department. Plus some of the people who are willing to volenteer have more exceperience for me. Any advise???
