Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: Rutgers - facilities?

Hey I just finished my freshmen year of the undergrad program there. PM me if you want.

It really depends on what your looking for in a school. I know I applied to a lot of schools with more technically progressive theater programs (Emerson for example), and then realized that what I really wanted was a more traditional school where i could focus more on the roots of management, and a receive a more universal education.

And if you cant download the application or whatever... if you go to system preferences, then click on Universal access and shift the display to white on black it does essentially the same thing. But when I'm using a laptop backstage I generally just have a multitude of excel sheets, so its already pretty much black and white.

I heard a rumor that it was becoming illegal to have cellphones on in theatres and movie theatres in some states.  Totally a rumor that I heard though.....can anyone back that up or point to more evidence of that? If it's true, that would definitely be a win for our team!
I know at one point I was working on a performance in a public library, and it was in fact a city law that cell phones could not be on inside the building. I certainly hope it catches on...

I note them mainly so I can remember to figure out why I missed them...

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: Inner Crew Issues

Try sitting down with her, in a calm environment (not a screaming match in front of the crew) and talk to her about the previous issues, explain why you want to do it (i.e. you want the production to be outstanding), explain that this is your last chance, and that she has all of next year to SM shows if whe wants to. But listen to her side of the arguement, there could be a lot of reasons why she wants to SM.

Out of curiosity, has she ever been ASM, or been on crew before? Is she also a senior? What you could do is shes not is let her co-sm the show, and say that your insuring that she'll be a better SM next year. Let her do all of the blocking notation, give her some experience in what its really like.  This allows you to do what you want, allows her to feel like shes doing what she wants, and lets you insure that there is an SM who knows what they are doing next year. If she has never even been ASM, you could tell her that she isn't experienced enough, or that she could ASM the show (that is if you have ASMs). Have you found out why she wants to stage manage? It's usually not just on a whim (although it could be). You could also tell her exactly what the job entails, that could be enough to make her not want to do it
best of luck.

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: PSMing vs. ASMing
« on: Aug 29, 2007, 09:26 pm »
It depends on your personality to an extent. ASMs have to deal with a lot more stressed actors during the show, while PSMs have to deal with actors during the rehearsal process and befor/after the shows. I personally prefer PSM solely because there is no "well did the PSM say its ok?" and second guessing your authority. But to each their own.

Tools of the Trade / Re: Backstage booth/SM area

For high school theatre something to keep people who shouldnt be in there out of there. Like locks on cabinets is a very good idea. I remember my sophmore year a few idiots got into my booth and decided it would be a good idea to spray the fire extinguisher all over the place... a disaster at best, however we got the school to compensate for our dimmer rack and light board. I digress... Also think about what your keeping there, if your going to have to douple as props mistress/master make sure you have room for them. I guess what you really need to do is think about what your using it for, and go from there...

Are you asking whether the dye will soak through the cloathes to the skin or if any dangerous chemicals will soak through to the skin?

Wow, it only took reading it six times to get it, but it sounds dead useful. Let me make sure i got this straight, the string provides the length of the wall while the angle drawn on the plywood provides the angle? Im curious why a drafting curse would be neccessary to do it...

Im also looking for colleges right now Penn State is deffinitely one of the ones im looking into. The Stage Management major looks like it wil give you a lot of hands on experience, while having peers to work with/relate to, but I havent actually experieced it so i guess my advice isnt worth much... oh well.
I dont know if Michigan is too far away for you, but Emerson looks like it has a pretty solid program as well.
