Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: "Senior Showcase"
« on: Nov 14, 2011, 11:53 am »
I go to school at Adelphi University just outside New York City. Our program is a general design/tech program. We started doing a show case for the desig/tech students last year, although ours is still small and just hosted at school in the lobby of our performing arts centre. The program is mainly made up of designers and technicians who all have pictures and models and such to display. Everyone was given a space on a table to set up their displays.  I'm one of very few stage managers so what in order to have a presence at the showcase I followed the guidelines for presenting at KCACTF. So I chose one show to represent my work and had a display board with paper work examples and production shots. Then had my prompt script on the table along with a few copies of my resume.
Hope this helps and break legs

The Green Room / Re: thoughts on sharing

Speaking as someone who is still in school and still learning their craft I greatly appreciate any knoelwdge/leasons imparted to me on SMNet and beyond.
I started stage managing in middle school. I mean, it wasn’t so much stage managing at that level, more like glorified babysitting, but the term and the profession was introduced to me then. For a few years I was stumbling in the dark making up my own rules; theatre was more about having fun and being with friends. I got serious about stage management in high school and was given a very early edition of Stern’s book. That’s when I stumbled across this site and it has been an invaluable tool to me ever since. Not just because there are paperwork examples or because I can get advice but also because there are stories of what it’s like to be out in the “real” world working.
Now I’m in college and have been fortunate enough to meet at least two people who have been willing to share what they’ve learned and know about stage managing; one is a professor, the other a fellow student (who has since graduated and is/was/will be in direct competition with me when I graduate and yet we are still friends). And I intend to share what I know with those underclassmen who are willing to ask and learn because I believe what PSMKay said is correct, it’s what makes our industry better. Sharing our knowledge, or trade secrets, is what makes the industry better.
And I still check SMNet regularly, if not for advice, then for the antidotes. It’s how I learn; it helps me grow as a person and stage manager. I may not contribute regularly (mainly because I don’t feel I have enough experience to do so) but for what it’s worth SMNet and the people who do contribute to it have helped me immensely on my journey as a stage manager and I think it would be a disservice if people stopped sharing what the know.

I did as well. I'd be happy to answer questions.

Two notes from Director to Actors the other night:

"You're getting confused by the angles of the tables and reality. Don't worry there is no reality"

"I call that a$$ acting"

SMNetwork Archives / Re: I could have kissed them!

I could have kissed them when....

The cast of our last show made cards and a little gift bag for the designers (all students), director, SM and ASM and presented them with the gifts on closing night and included me as their "Standby ASM" because I had helped with rehearsals when the ASM was out with pneumonia. IT was a sweet gesture and very much appreciated.

Tools of the Trade / Re: THE Sharpie topic

I just discovered Sharpie Pens and don't know how I went through life without them! I wish they came in more colors though, and were click- able.

My other favorite Sharpies are the ultra fine tip click-ables.

College and Graduate Studies / Re: college feedback

I have finally finished all my apps. to college and all my interviews. I'd love to visit all the schools, but I don't think that will be financially possible. So I was wondering if I could get some feedback about a few schools. I'm wondering about Adelphi, University of Cincinnati, and University of Evansville. Thanks for any feedback!

Why would you consider Adelphi over Hofstra?

Because I'd never heard of Hofstra until you mentioned it. Can you tell me more about the program?

College and Graduate Studies / Re: Texas Schools
« on: Jul 27, 2007, 02:22 am »
Hello, I live in Texas too, and while I personally want to get the hell out of here when I graduate, I do know of some good colleges here. One of our directors at school is a recent graduate from Baylor and she loved it! Anytime we start on a college talk she always mentions Baylor. Another good school is TWU (Texas Women's University). Don't worry, it's a coed college now, but my other director just got her MFA there. It's smaller but the theatre space on campus and great and Denton is only about 45 minutes away from Dallas, so theres that.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: The Ultimate Decision
« on: Jul 27, 2007, 02:08 am »
I love telling this story!
In choosing my elective classes for 6th grade I had to choose between theatre and orchestra (I was in the 5th grade orchestra, how cute..). I was having trouble making the decision until my mom told me how my very first babysitter (who I adored) always said a was a very dramatic child, she also assured me that the theatre teacher was amazing, so I went for it. Now, I am not an extremely outgoing person, I tend to be the reserved observant type, so being in a theatre class where I had to act infront of people was touch. My theatre teacher picked up on that and 2nd semester she made me the AD for the class play and then asked me to SM the musical. I was hooked from that moment on. Up until that point, I had wanted to be a marine biologist.

I too will be a senior in HS next, and while I am very fortunate to have two wonderful directors, I can feel your pain. I have worked with some crazy people in community theatre and as great as my school directors are, they have their moments. I agree that you can't make a decision in 30 minutes, take it from someone who almost quite the love of her life as well, it takes a lot of thinking about. If the woman is truly intolerable, maybe quit school theatre for the year and focus on community theatre. If that's not an option, I guess, like you said, you should just suck it up. It sounds like you have friends on crew with you who can all sympathize. Plus, in the world outside of HS, there are a ton of crazies, so consider this good practise.
