it totally depends on your situation.
do you have steady sm work? if you do then you can probably get away without a day job.
i'm just starting out so i don't have steady work and i have to have a day job or i'de be screwed. i work 11-3 monday through friday which gives me plenty of time to clean up and get to rehearsal and performances.

Stage Management: Plays & Musicals / Re: Noises Off

seeing as its october you may have already done the show. but, aisde from the props is to stay on the actors about their lines. it may seem like the kind of show where if you drop a line or mix something up or paraphrase its fine and it rolls on cause thats what happens in the script. but missed/flubbed lines can kill the show. there are specific cue lines that if they are in the wrong place or missed can send the actors spiraling into oblivion. trust me i've watched it happen, as i sat helplessy in the booth with no way to get anyone back on track.

Students and Novice Stage Managers / Re: Help please

i only briefly looked at the link listed and it looks awsome, and i plan on speading too much time looking at how others do their paperwork. when i started out i played on excel and microsoft word trying out different layouts and what order made things easy to find. as long as it looks clean, everything is spelled correctly, and most importantly you can find it quickly and easily you will be and look professional.

hey slinky

i went to illinois state university in normal, illinois. the university is good and the theatre department has tons of options for stage managers. i was rarely without a gig and its good experience. the spaces have some quirks to them, but what space doesn't. however, if you're interested in working two aspects (sm and lights or set or acting) it can be tricky because the sm staff is small and it can be difficult to take on other positions.
however, you may want to visit and spend some time there cause it is in a small town and it took me forever to adjust to it.
